Basketball Africa League club forfeits game after refusing to comply with jersey sponsorship rules

Basketball Africa League club Dynamo BBC forfeited its game against FUS Rabat at Pretoria's SunBet Arena yesterday after “refusing to comply” with BAL rules governing jersey and uniform requirements, according to Anathi Wulushe of TIMESLIVE.co.za. In their first Kalahari Conference game against Cape Town Tigers on Saturday, the Dynamo covered the “Visit Rwanda” sponsor logo on their uniforms with black tape, which was “apparently due to the political tension” between Rwanda and Burundi. Rabat, however, had the logo “clearly displayed” on its apparel. BAL and the Rwanda Development Board are in a partnership to “showcase the country as a tourism and investment destination and highlight Africa’s growing sports industry” (TIMESLIVE.co.za, 3/10). In Africa, Damas Sikubwabo reported the decision comes a day after the Burundian Basketball Federation wrote to BAL proposing that the Dynamo “play with their own jerseys without mention of the sponsor's (Visit Rwanda)‘s logo.” It "remains unclear" if Dynamo will be allowed continue to participate in the Kalahari Conference “should they resist wearing sponsor’s jersey” (Kigali NEW TIMES, 3/10).
