Football world reacts to Peter King's retirement announcement

NBC Sports' Peter King this morning announced his planned retirement following more than 40 years in the business, and people all over the football world reacted to the news:

  • No Laying Up Editorial Dir Kevin Van Valkenburg: "An incredible run, and to do the job all these years with kindness as your North Star is the rarest streak in media. Congrats on retirement, and may the road rise to meet you!"
  • ESPN NFL reporter Ed Werder: "I’ve known and admired @peter_king since he gave me my first big opportunity - to be a regular NFL contributor to his SI columns and later convinced CNN-SI to hire me to do TV. Thank you!"
  • NFL Network host Rich Eisen: "What a remarkable run for one of the nicest, warmest, respected, most giving to others force in NFL media I’ve been fortunate to meet and call a friend. One of the many things I know I know about the great @peter_king."
  • ESPN NFL insider Adam Schefter: "Congratulations to the Hall-of-Fame reporter and storyteller @peter_king, who announced he is “retiring*”. Nobody went where he did, interviewed who he did, and loved what he did more than Peter. He is a legend. Monday mornings, and this business, won’t be the same without him."
  • ESPN NFL reporter Field Yates: "An iconic run for @peter_king. Football fans have been so fortunate for so long to wake up each Monday morning to your column with unparalleled insight into all things NFL. Congratulations, Peter!"
  • ESPN football analyst Louis Riddick: "Simply put, @peter_king is a legend. As a professional,  and as a man. One who treated me and my family with the utmost respect. Like family. Enjoy whatever structure “retirement” has in store for you Peter, and thank you for every single thing you have done for me, talked about with me, and shared with me."
  • Medill School of Journalism Dir of Sports Journalism J.A. Adande: "A 21-coffee cup salute to the career of @peter_king, an all-time great. He elevated coverage of football and all sports (If you like @ZachLowe_NBA’s weekly columns, thank Peter). Glad I got 1 last tidbit of perspective from Peter at the Super Bowl this year."
  • Puck sports media reporter John Ourand: "Peter King is one of the classiest reporters I've met. My Monday mornings will have a huge hole now."
  • PGA Tour Digital Assistant Editor Kevin Prise: "I grew up wanting to be like @peter_king. Since middle school, I’ve had a Mon/Tues solo meal to unplug w/ column. Every single week. Thank you sir for decades of inspiration to be a great storyteller. If I can do .01 for golf as you did for football, I’ll have had a good career."
  • MMQB Senior NFL Reporter Albert Breer: "Maybe the most fitting thing about this is how many people he helped/mentored over the years he’s working to promote in the column. I’m one who could never do enough to repay him. And hopefully we can all do the only thing he ever asked -- help someone else. Thank you, @peter_king."
  • The Athletic Senior NFL Writer Kalyn Kahler: "THANK YOU @peter_king !! You’ve been the greatest mentor I could ask for. Congrats on your “retirement”! I’m gonna miss the details in your column so much."
  • Fox Sports Senior National Writer Peter Schrager: "Congrats, @peter_king … can’t over-state how kind and gracious Peter was and is to younger scribes, as seen in his column today or so many of the kind / helpful words he’s shared -- in print or not -- to so many of us over the years. It’s a great way to be and how it should be."
