Peacock exclusive NFL playoff game propels 'biggest day' of streaming in history

The game “averaged close to 23 million viewers” and “accounted for 3.9 billion minutes of watch time," almost 10% of all streaming viewing that dayGetty Images

The first streaming-exclusive NFL playoff game between the Chiefs and Dolphins in the NFL Wild Card round on Peacock “helped drive the biggest day on streaming platforms that Nielsen has ever measured,” according to Rick Porter of the HOLLYWOOD REPORTER. The day of the playoff game, Saturday, Jan. 13, topped the list at 40.78 billion minutes streamed. Porter noted the game being the first playoff game ever exclusive to a streamer “drove the streaming boomlet." The game “averaged close to 23 million viewers” and “accounted for 3.9 billion minutes of watch time (including over-the-air broadcasts in the teams’ local markets) -- almost” 10% of all streaming viewing that day. The playoff game also drove Peacock to its “largest share of viewing for a month in the Gauge rankings.” The NBCUniversal streamer had 1.6% of all TV use for the month. YouTube (8.6%) and Netflix (7.9%) “remained the top individual streaming platforms” (HOLLYWOOD REPORTER, 2/20).

EASY TRANSITION: PUCK’s Julia Alexander wrote NBCU should “position Peacock as a national and local hub for live sports” given “both NBC’s various contracts with pro sports leagues and Comcast’s own local affiliate deals.” She noted next up is the 2024 Paris Olympics, which is “always a boon for NBCU." Alexander: "Though let’s see if those subscribers stick around." Peacock also “added 3 million subscribers last quarter," giving it a total of 31 million (PUCK, 2/20).
