Sources: NBC eyes Geoff Ogilvy for vacant golf analyst role

Geoff Ogilvy has increasingly become more involved in off-course matters, including being a vice captain at the last two Presidents Cupsgetty images

NBC Sports is making a run at Geoff Ogilvy in its search for Paul Azinger's replacement on its golf broadcasts, sources told SBJ this week. Ogilvy, the 2006 U.S. Open winner, has gained more notoriety in golf circles in recent years for his knowledge of course architecture, as well as his opinion on current matters.

NBC is expected to make an announcement regarding plans for the role within the next week. One source said NBC could end up splitting the lead analyst role between two people, with Ogilvy handling some of the network’s bigger golf events.

That move would not be unprecedented at NBC. In the 1980s, Lee Trevino split time as lead analyst on NBC golf broadcasts with other announcers.

Other names such as current NBC/Golf Channel analysts Brandel Chamblee, David Duval and Brad Faxon have been brought up as possibilities for the position. Paul McGinley, the former European Ryder Cup captain and current analyst for Golf Channel, auditioned for the position earlier this month during the Hero World Challenge.

The role came open when Azinger and the network could not come to an agreement on a new deal last month. NBC had hired Azinger in late 2018 to replace longtime analyst Johnny Miller.

Ogilvy, 46, has become increasingly involved in off-course endeavors in recent years after winning eight times on the PGA Tour from 2005-2014. His OCM Golf is doing the course renovation at Medinah ahead of the 2026 Presidents Cup there. Ogilvy has also been an assistant captain for the last two International Presidents Cup teams, an event NBC has the broadcast rights to.

NBC’s first event of the new year is The Sentry in Hawaii, from Jan. 4-7.
