A's uncertain future making it tough to attract free agents long-term

It seems “far-fetched” that a free agent would want to join the A’s on a multiyear deal as the team remains "in limbo as to where they’ll play” after their Coliseum lease expires next year and “before their stadium opens in Las Vegas, supposedly in 2028,” according to John Shea of the S.F. CHRONICLE. A’s GM David Forst, who "realizes the limited resources provided by frugal owner John Fisher" and the uncertainty of the interim years "will hamstring his bid to create a competitive team." Frost: “It is a weird situation to be in, to have this kind of uncertainty. We’d like to know where we’re playing in ’25, ’26 and ’27, and then we could deal with a sort of prospect of moving. But the combination of two losing years and uncertainty of the future has been hard on people who work here.” Forst said he has had discussions with agents who “invariably ask” where the A’s would play in 2025. Frost, who is hoping to learn specifics later in the offseason said, “We don’t have an answer for that yet.” The A’s "would prefer to remain in Northern California in the interim years" if only because it would "guarantee the payout from their regional sports network (NBC Sports California), which amounted to" $67M in 2023. Frost said, "But there are some agents who said they’re more interested in a one-year deal. If they’re willing to talk about a two-year deal, it must mean they’re willing to play wherever we are in ’25.” Frost: “We’re sort of taking it a year at a time right now, because it’s hard to plan for even ’25 without knowing what that looks like from a venue standpoint or revenue standpoint, any of those things” (S.F. CHRONICLE, 12/4).
