Gov. Wes Moore remaining aggressive in pursuit to keep Commanders in Maryland

Gov. Moore believes Maryland is the right place for the Commanders to beGetty Images

Maryland Gov. Wes Moore has the “most to lose” if FedEx Field “isn’t replaced by a gleaming, multibillion-dollar stadium and a mixed-use development to attract year-round activity in Maryland,” and his efforts to persuade the Commanders to stay in Landover have been “very aggressive,” according to Sam Fortier of the WASHINGTON POST. Moore said he knows economically what the Commanders “mean to this region.” When asked about his relationship with the new Commanders ownership, Moore said, “We’ve just been very aggressive in making sure that they know that it’s not just that I believe that this is the right place for them to be.” Fortier noted if D.C. and Virginia “get the legislative help each needs,” D.C. Mayor Muriel E. Bowser and Virginia Gov. Glenn Youngkin “would be formidable opponents” in the battle for the Commanders’ home. Bowser is “already fighting” to bring the team back to D.C. A “longtime champion of the team’s return to the RFK Stadium site,” Fortier wrote Bowser “must overcome several daunting hurdles, including skeptical neighborhood residents, adversarial city council members and the uncertain future of a bill advancing through Congress that would give the city control of RFK.” When asked “how much public funding he would be willing to offer” the Commanders for a new stadium, Moore said, “We’re already putting our best foot forward.” He also pointed to the Blue Line Corridor investment, which runs around the Landover stadium (WASHINGTON POST, 12/2).
