Nike, Alberto Salazar settle lawsuit with Mary Cain

Nike and former track coach Alberto Salazar have settled a $20M lawsuit filed by distance runner Mary Cain that "alleged emotional and physical abuse at the hands of the coach" and a "lack of oversight" by the company. Terms of the settlement "were not disclosed," and the lawsuit "had been scheduled for an important hearing" yesterday before the settlement was reached. The resolution of the lawsuit "ends one of Nike’s highest-profile legal battles," as Cain’s lawsuit "came on the heels of explosive news reports about an alleged 'boys' club' culture at the company and a doping scandal involving Salazar," whose deep ties to Nike included having a building on the company’s campus named after him. In 2019, Cain revealed she was "emotionally and physically abused by a system designed by Alberto and endorsed by Nike" (Portland OREGONIAN, 11/27).
