Rory McIlroy says time-management the reason for resignation from PGA Tour board

PGA Tour player Rory McIlroy said that his decision to resign from the Tour's Policy Board was “mostly a time-management issue,” according to John Huggan of GOLF DIGEST. McIlroy said, “Something had to give. There are only so many hours in a day and only so many days in a week. I’ve got a lot going on in my life right now between trying to be a world-class golfer and trying to be a good husband and a good father. I’ve got a growing investment portfolio that is taking up more of my time. I’m involved with TGL and sort of in the weeds with that. On top of all that, the Policy Board stuff was taking more of my time than ever this year.” Huggan noted in what are likely to be the "peak years of his already storied career,” McIlroy “gave plenty to the PGA Tour cause” since joining the board in 2021. McIlroy: “There has been a lot of time spent on this over the last few weeks with different investment groups and meeting different people who are interested. It just got to the point where, although I like being busy, I like being busy on my own things. And it got to the point where I just couldn’t fit it all in.” Shane Lowry, a member of the Tour's Player Advisory Council, said, "I spent a lot of time with him and saw what he was having to do. Board meetings. Calls from other players on his weeks off. Players wanting to talk to him when he walks onto a range. I don’t understand why anyone would want to do that job, to be honest. I went on the PAC this year and it’s just not worth it” (GOLF DIGEST, 11/16).

SPEAKING OUT: Longtime Tour player Lanto Griffin said, “Rory was great because he was approachable by everybody, but at the same time he was bought by the tour. … The guy who’s running the board is being paid by all the title sponsors, it’s a little sketchy to me.” Griffin said that he would like to see someone who has “prior experience on the Player Advisory Council or board” and was “a well-liked veteran by the majority of the players.” He added that whoever replaces McIlroy as a player director could be someone who “once was in the top 10 but isn’t any more” (GOLFWEEK, 11/16).
