Liberty seeing increases in attendance, ratings amid on-court success

The WNBA N.Y. Liberty have seen over 100% “growth in overall ticket sales” this year, with a plus-200% “lift in season-ticket memberships entering the season,” according to Ben Pickman of THE ATHLETIC. The Liberty, currently 32-8 and sitting at the top of the Eastern Conference following the additions of Fs Breanna Stewart and Jonquel Jones in the offseason, are seeing their average home attendance “up more than 2,500 people per game” compared to 2022. Through Sept. 3, the Liberty’s national TV ratings are up 58% YOY -- the “second-largest ratings increase around the league.” Stewart recognizes that for many attending Liberty games, it “might be their first time at a WNBA game.” She said, “Let’s see if they can come multiple times. Let’s see if we can turn some Nets season-ticket holders into Liberty season-ticket holders. Word of mouth is probably one of the biggest ways that the WNBA spreads, in attendance and viewership.” Pickman notes the Liberty have seen a 600% “growth in overall engagement across its social media platforms” and have “more than doubled their retail e-commerce sales.” They also have 10 “additional partners this year who hadn’t been with the team before.” Liberty CEO Keia Clarke said it is "important not to miss on optimizing" the team's on-court success from the business side (THE ATHLETIC, 9/12).
