Fernando Tatis Jr. bringing unique flair, personality to cleats

Padres RF/SS Fernando Tatis Jr. has been “spotted in 13 different variations of custom cleats” this season which “tap into sneaker culture, with many modeled after rare releases and unique, limited-edition collaborations between Nike and lifestyle or luxury brands,” according to Annie Heilbrunn of the SAN DIEGO UNION-TRIBUNE. All of Tatis’ cleats are Jordan 1s and are “designed by Tatis and his close friend and business manager Nick Drbal.” Drbal owns Xample, a “lifestyle and business management company.” Heilbrunn noted the cleats “feature Tatis’ personal logo along with his number.” Heilbrunn added that Jordans “weren’t always on Tatis’ feet.” Back in 2020, Tatis signed an endorsement deal with Adidas after an “electrifying season” in which he placed third for the NL Rookie of the Year award. He was a “prominent face of the global brand,” but the partnership ended last year after Tatis “received an 80-game suspension for testing positive for PEDs.” The “one-of-one designs” are a “nod to Tatis’ favorite athletes, colors and pop culture references.” Some feature details that he “simply likes, while others hold deeper meaning” (SAN DIEGO UNION-TRIBUNE, 8/25).
