Weekend Rap .... Latest News .... Lowered Expectations?

Quicken Loans National Attendance Suffering From Tiger's Early Exit

The PGA Tour Quicken Loans National drew about 24,000 announced paid fans Thursday and about 30,000 Friday, but it "might be difficult" to hit Tournament Dir Mike Antolini's pre-event attendance goal now that Tiger Woods has missed the cut and is done for the weekend. Antolini before the tournament began said he expected "in excess of 130,000 fans" for the week. The galleries "were noticeably thinner and more spread out for Saturday's third round than they were the first two days" (Baltimore SUN, 6/29).

Meanwhile, complaints about "an overabundance of Tiger coverage comes both from dyed-in-the-wool Tiger haters and from less passionate golf fans who simply resent the way he chews the scenery." But those responses themselves are "just another example of how Woods moves the needle in golf like nobody else" (WALL STREET JOURNAL, 6/28).

Germany-U.S. Garners High TV, Live Streaming Numbers For ESPN

ESPN’s Germany-U.S. World Cup telecast Thursday averaged a 6.7 final rating and 10.7 million viewers, making it the second-highest rated, and third-most viewed, men’s World Cup match ever on ESPN or ESPN2. WatchESPN's live-stream had 3.2 unique viewers and 143.0 million live minutes viewed. The telecast also ranks as ESPN’s most-viewed weekday, non-holiday, afternoon program on record. The telecast at its highest point averaged 12.1 million viewers and a 7.7 rating from 1:30-2:00pm ET. Meanwhile, ESPN.com and ESPNFC.com set platform records Thursday for unique visitors in one day, hitting 19.5 million and 7.8 million, respectively (ESPN).

NBA Plans To Have Centralized Replay Center Up And Running In '14-15

A source said that the NBA "plans to have an off-site replay center for in-game reviews in place by the start of next season." The centralized replay location, which would be located in Secaucus, N.J., is "almost a done deal." The competition committee "needs to meet one more time, but it could be approved" at July's BOG meeting in Las Vegas. The replay center "will have availability to multiple feeds and angles and provide another set of eyes and assistance for the on-court referees" (USATODAY.com, 6/27).

Oakland Council Members Skip Meeting, Prevent Vote On New A's Lease

Two Oakland city council members "acting on their colleague's orders ... did not attend" Friday's special meeting of the Oakland-Alameda County Joint Powers Authority board that oversees the O.co Coliseum. Without enough members present to vote on new lease for the A's, several of the county's representatives on the board, "used the forum to apologize to the A's and attack the city for forcing a second postponement of the lease extension." Friday's events "underscored long-standing tensions between the city and the county over their joint management of the Coliseum complex." However, the boycott is "unlikely to impede a 10-year lease extension with the A's" (OAKLANDTRIBUNE.com, 6/27).

Nets Reject Kidd's Power Play; Coach May Leave For Bucks

A source said that Nets coach Jason Kidd "recently approached ownership with a series of demands," which the team turned down, and his departure from the team to coach the Bucks is now "a sudden possibility." Kidd asked Nets Ownership for a role "overseeing the Nets’ basketball operations department in addition to his head-coaching responsibilities." The source added that Kidd did not want GM Billy King "to be dismissed, but wanted to be given a title and placed above him in the organizational hierarchy." Nets Ownership, after rejecting Kidd's request, were then "asked by the Bucks for permission to speak with Kidd about the prospect of hiring him and the Nets consented" (N.Y. POST, 6/29).

Cal Names Michael Williams Interim AD In Wake Of Barbour's Retirement

Univ. of California Berkeley Foundation Vice Chair Michael Williams will serve as the school's interim AD "until a successor can be found" for Sandy Barbour, who stepped down from the position Friday. Williams in '09 "retired from a career in finance" and has "been active on campus since then." Williams: "I don't have interest in sports management as a profession. I love this university and I'm deeply committed to what it stands for" (S.F. CHRONICLE, 6/28).

FC Dallas-Crew Game Postponed After Firefighter Struck By Lightning

An off-duty Columbus fire lieutenant was in critical condition "after being struck by lightning in the parking lot at Crew Stadium" shortly before last night’s scheduled game against FC Dallas. The game was "never started" and was "called off." It was postponed until 2:00pm ET today. Crew Chair Anthony Precourt wrote on Twitter, “We are sincerely sorry about tonight’s postponement, but your safety is of the utmost importance” (COLUMBUS DISPATCH, 6/29). The Crew said that "tickets from Saturday will be honored" today (DALLASNEWS.com, 6/28).

Heat's Wade, Haslem Opt Out; Bosh Expected To Follow Today

Heat G Dwyane Wade and F Udonis Haslem yesterday "decided to exercise the early termination option in their contacts" following F LeBron James' decision to do the same. Their decisions "could be remembered as another landmark ... in the history of Heat offseason roster building." If C Chris Bosh opts out today, which he is "expected to do, then the Heat would have a record" $55M of cap space entering free agency. The Heat’s "only other player currently under contract" is backup G Norris Cole (MIAMI HERALD, 6/29).

Weekend Hot Reads....

The K.C. STAR's Sam Mellinger noted the FCC is reconsidering the legality of the NFL's blackout rule, and the league "is worried." The AP's Eddie Pells wrote the success of Denver's Three Lions pub -- where "a new generation of American-born soccer fans piled in" Thursday to watch the Germany-U.S. match -- is a "microcosm of what's happening around America."
