Weekend Rap .... Latest News .... Who's The Boss?

NBA To Appoint Clippers CEO, Who Will Reportedly Supersede Roeser

The NBA yesterday announced that it "would soon appoint" a CEO to oversee the Clippers' operations in the wake of the Donald Sterling scandal. NBA Deputy Commissioner Mark Tatum yesterday "briefly addressed Clippers employees" -- excluding coaches and players -- about four hours before Game 7. Although current team President Andy Roeser "was present at the meeting ... his future is uncertain" (N.Y. TIMES, 5/4). Sources said that once appointed, the CEO "will supersede Roeser, and be given the power to decide if Roeser remains with the organization" (ESPNLA.com, 5/3). Clippers co-Owner Rochelle Sterling yesterday released a statement that said she "supported the NBA's move to work with the franchise to appoint a new CEO" (L.A. TIMES, 5/4).

Meanwhile, TNT averaged 6.0 million viewers for Clippers-Warriors Game 7 last night, marking the best of the net's three Game 7s yesterday and the net's best first-round Game 7 since Lakers-Nuggets in '12 (Austin Karp, Assistant Managing Editor).

Kentucky Derby Rating Down, But Event Has Second-Best Crowd

NBC drew a 10.1 overnight rating for California Chrome's win at the 140th running of the Kentucky Derby yesterday, down 3% from a 10.4 rating last year. The race segment of the Derby went head-to-head with TNT's Pacers-Hawks Game 7. Louisville led all markets with a 37.8 local rating (Austin Karp, Assistant Managing Editor).

Churchill Downs saw 164,906 spectators for the event, marking the second-highest attendance in the Derby's history. On-track wagering on the Derby totaled $11.9M, an increase of 4% from the '13 total. Wagering from all sources on the race card totaled $186.6M, an increase of 1%. The figure also ties the all-time record set in '12. All-sources wagering on the Derby declined 1% to $129.2M (CDI).

Mayweather Remains Perfect Before Sellout Crowd In Vegas

Boxer Floyd Mayweather Jr. last night at MGM Grand Garden Arena "survived a 12-round street fight against Argentina’s Marcos Maidana to unify the world welterweight title and improve to 46-0 in front of a sellout crowd of 16,238" (LAS VEGAS REVIEW-JOURNAL, 5/4). A September rematch between the two fighters appears to be a "safe bet" after they both called for one following the fight (LAS VEGAS SUN, 5/4).

Meanwhile, Corona's logo "was seemingly everywhere" during the fight, which was held on Cinco de Mayo weekend. Corona "was one of the top sponsors of the event, so it got promo space" on the ropes, the bikinis of the ring girls, the round cards held by the ring girls and an attraction at the entrance of the arena where fans could have their photos taken with three Corona-bikini-clad models (LAS VEGAS SUN, 5/4).

Tim Hortons Extends Bills Deal, Will Have Branded Gate At The Ralph

The Bills on Friday announced a five-year extension with Tim Hortons in a deal that will include the branding of one of Ralph Wilson Stadium's six new gates. The Tim Hortons gate, to be completed by the start of this season, will have a three-dimensional version of the company's coffee cup atop the gate pylon. The company also will now serve Timbits doughnut holes at six branded concession stands and continue to serve its premium-blend coffee at various locations around the facility (Bills).

Jim Brown Calls NCAA "Reprehensible" At Pro Football HOF Fan Fest

Pro Football HOFer Jim Brown "is not a fan of the NCAA, a truth he made more than evident" yesterday at the Pro Football HOF Fan Fest. He said in a roundtable discussion with fellow Pro Football HOFers Barry Sanders and Harry Carson, "The NCAA is probably the most reprehensible organization God ever created. Total exploitation. The kind of money they make, the kind of life they live, it's embarrassing" ESPN.com, 5/3). The I-X Center "hosted 100 members of football royalty" yesterday as part of the event, which continues through today (AKRON BEACON JOURNAL, 5/4).

Sacramento City Council Postpones Vote On NBA Kings' Arena

The Sacramento City Council’s vote on the NBA Kings' new downtown arena "won’t take place May 13, after all." City officials were "unable to complete the fine points of the development agreement in time" and yesterday they "postponed indefinitely the vote on the Downtown Plaza project" and the city’s proposed $255M subsidy. Officials said that they "remained confident the deal is moving forward, the delay will be brief" and the project’s October '16 scheduled opening "isn’t in peril" (SACRAMENTO BEE, 5/4).

Rutgers, Delany Begin Tour To Promote School's Move To Big Ten

Big Ten Commissioner and New Jersey native Jim Delany, speaking at the first stop on Rutgers' tour to promote its move to the conference, told a crowd of approximately 200 hundred fans in Midtown Manhattan on Friday night, "It's really nice to be home." Rutgers AD Julie Hermann, who "did not speak to reporters, enthusiastically addressed the crowd" (Newark STAR-LEDGER, 5/4). Rutgers football coach Kyle Flood: "I think there's a lot of reasons why we're in the Big Ten right now, and I don't think you can look past the fact that we fit the profile of what a Big Ten university should be" (Newark STAR-LEDGER, 5/4).
