Weekend Rap .... Latest News .... Headed To The Hill

NU Union Reps Headed To Capitol Hill; Emmert Tackles Issue On TV

College Athletes Players Association President Ramogi Huma and former Northwestern QB Kain Colter "will take their case to Capitol Hill lawmakers" this week "for informational briefings with an undisclosed set of legislators." Huma said, "Obviously, Congress has the power to affect conditions for college athletes as well, and we want to correct some of the false statements that have been made about what we're trying to do" (ESPN.com, 3/30)

Meanwhile, after joining NBC's "Meet The Press" a week ago, NCAA President Mark Emmert made two more TV appearances this weekend. He spoke this morning on CBS' "Face The Nation," and yesterday on the TBS' NCAA Tournament pregame show. Emmert told Greg Gumbel, "If the courts decide to go down a road where they create a unionized labor model, I think that is a disastrous outcome for college sports -- and we will see a very, very different landscape in five or ten years" ("NCAA March Madness," TBS, 3/29).

Islanders' Wang "Willing To Listen" To Offers To Buy Team

Islanders Owner Charles Wang on Friday said he is "willing to listen" to offers to buy the team, but he added that "no deal is close and he is not on the verge of selling." Wang: "In recent months, there have been numerous expressions of interest. ... As I have consistently stated, I have been and remain willing to listen. However, potential buyers' expressions of interest in the team or even my listening to them does not mean that any deal will be reached." No potential buyers have been identified (NEWSDAY, 3/29). Sources said that Wang's asking price is $300M (Christopher Botta, Staff Writer).

MLB, MLBPA Amend Joint Drug Agreement, Lengthen Suspensions

By Eric Fisher

MLB and the MLBPA on Friday announced a large set of adjustments to the Joint Drug Agreement that substantially increase testing protocols and penalties for use of PEDs. A first-time violation now yields an 80-game suspension, up from 50 games; a second-time violation warrants a 162-game suspension, up from 100 games; and a third violation remains a lifetime suspension. Offenders will be ineligible to play in the postseason or receive playoff shares in the year in which they are penalized.

The changes also contain two provisions aimed at lessening problems around inadvertent ingestion of banned substances. Players will now have year-round access to supplements not on the banned list, and an independent arbitrator will have the ability to reduce suspensions if players can prove substances in question were not taken to enhance performance.

MLB Preseason Games In Montreal Draw 96,000, Exceed Expectations

The Mets-Blue Jays preseason games at Montreal's Olympic Stadium drew "more than 96,000 fans" combined on Friday and Saturday. MLB Exec VP/Administration & CIO John McHale Jr. said, "I was certainly willing to call success an average of about 25,000 fans per game. This is astonishing. There is a fire that burns brightly here for Major League Baseball and that's a message that I'll be proud to carry to the commissioner." The crowd chanted "Let's Go Expos!" during the games (Montreal GAZETTE, 3/30).

Meanwhile, a 40-year-old man last night was "in stable condition" after falling "between 10 to 15 metres at the Olympic Stadium" during Friday's game. The man "attempted to stand on a railing in his efforts to excite the crowd." He then "planted his feet on the bottom rung and leaned towards the field but suddenly lost footing and very quickly fell head-first down to the concrete below" (CTVNEWS.ca, 3/29).

Goodell Among Mourners At Small, Private Funeral For Ralph Wilson

Yesterday's funeral for Bills Founder & Owner Ralph Wilson Jr. "was a relatively small, private affair" at Detroit's Jefferson Avenue Presbyterian Church. NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell "was among the mourners, who appeared to number a bit more than 100." Lions Vice Chair Bill Ford Jr. and members of the Hunt family, who own the Chiefs, were also "seen attending" the service, but most owners and NFL execs "stayed away due to the private nature." Pro Football HOFer Thurman Thomas was "the only" current or former NFLer seen in attendance (BUFFALO NEWS, 3/30).

The Bills on Saturday will honor Wilson with a "public celebration and remembrance at the team's fieldhouse" (AP, 3/28).

Sources: Man United Not Looking To Sell Old Trafford Naming Rights

Manchester United is "adamant" that the EPL club will not sell the naming rights to Old Trafford, and that it is "not in talks with any commercial partner" that would result in its ground being rebranded, according to sources. Rumors on social media suggested that the stadium "could be renamed after kit manufacturers Nike in a lucrative deal that would enable them either to pay off debt or finance the signing of new players." But ManU has maintained that there is "absolutely no truth in stories that their ground will be rebranded" (ESPNFC.com, 3/30).

Meanwhile, ManU is "considering a revolutionary new approach" for its upcoming kit deal, and is "talking to retailers and fashion brands as well as the usual kit suppliers." One suggestion "has been to offer three types of shirts to supporters depending on price." The club "could sell 'match jerseys' -- more expensive -- as worn by the players in addition to the standard replica shirt." It also might "market a cheaper version of the shirt which would still be an official kit" (FINANCIAL TIMES, 3/30).

Push To Legalize Fantasy Sports In Arizona Dies In State Senate

A bill backed by Arizona Senate Majority Whip Adam Driggs to make fantasy sports competitions legal in the state "was killed in the Senate by opposition from Native American gaming proponents." Arizona is "among a handful" of states where fantasy sports "are technically illegal." Driggs said that the issue is now "dead for the legislative season." His bill "intended to set fantasy sports apart from gambling and outline what would be considered a fantasy sport under state law" (ARIZONA REPUBLIC, 3/30).

Reunion Of Pistons' Title Team Draws Sellout Crowd To Palace

At Friday night's Heat-Pistons game, a "sellout crowd arrived to witness the 25th anniversary reunion" of the Pistons' '89 championship team. It was a "rare electric night" at the Palace of Auburn Hills, as the franchise is "limping toward the end of its fifth straight season not making the playoffs." While there was a "smattering of boos" for Pistons President of Basketball Operations Joe Dumars, the cheers "definitely carried the day." Former NBA Commissioner David Stern "was in attendance, entertaining Palace staff before the game" (DETROIT FREE PRESS, 3/29).

Play Ball! More Sewage Issues For A's; Sellouts For Padres, Rays

A's third base coach Mike Gallego yesterday at O.co Coliseum "captured video of water backing up in the showers and toilets in the coaches' area of the A's clubhouse," marking yet another sewage issue for the "aging stadium" (SAN JOSE MERCURY NEWS, 3/30).

A "sellout crowd" will be on hand for tonight's Dodgers-Padres game. The get-in price on StubHub last night "was $39 for a Park at the Park entry, with the site’s most expensive ticket -- Row 4 in the Lexus Home Plate Club 6 -- going for $1,322" (SAN DIEGO UNION-TRIBUNE, 3/30).

The Rays on Friday announced a sellout for tomorrow's opener against the Blue Jays, "making it the ninth straight home opener that has sold out." Capacity at Tropicana Field "is reduced to 31,042 this season due to renovations in the outfield" (TAMPA BAY TIMES, 3/29).

Today's N.Y. Times features a front-page piece about first-year Yankees P Masahiro Tanaka and "the Japanese approach to baseball" (THE DAILY).

Weekend Hot Reads....

The INDIANAPOLIS STAR's Stephen Holder writes in Colts co-Owner & Vice Chair Carlie Irsay-Gordon, the organization appears to "have someone whose makeup is tailor-made to lead." Those who know Irsay-Gordon, who will fill her father Jim Irsay's role with the team while he is in rehab, say that she "possesses a rare ability to be gracious and caring while not mincing words nor speaking ambiguously." Meanwhile, 30 years after the Colts relocated to Indy, the INDIANAPOLIS STAR and the Baltimore SUN offered contrasting retrospectives.

The BOSTON GLOBE's Baxter Holmes writes the question persists of how useful SportVU's data is to the NBA, and an answer "is hard to find, especially because teams are protective of their methods." What the data "can and can’t do is at the center of a debate about not just SportVU but analytics in general."
