Weekend Rap .... Latest News .... House Of Cards

MLB Cardinals Extend Mozeliak's Contract Through '18 Season

The MLB Cardinals yesterday announced a two-year extension with GM John Mozeliak. The contract "is intended to keep Mozeliak in place" through the '18 season, one year beyond manager Mike Matheny’s current deal. Mozeliak’s second extension in as many years "gives the Cardinals one of the most secure" manager-GM duos in the majors. The contract, financial terms of which were not disclosed, gives Chair Bill DeWitt Jr. the "continuity and credibility he craves" (ST. LOUIS POST-DISPATCH, 4/13).

Meanwhile, the BOSTON GLOBE's Nick Cafardo ranks the best MLB organizations, with the Cardinals at the top of the list (BOSTON GLOBE, 4/13).

Judge Clears Way For Ed O'Bannon Vs. NCAA Case To Reach Trial

U.S. District Judge Claudia Wilken on Friday "cleared the way for the Ed O'Bannon vs. NCAA lawsuit to reach trial on June 9." She "provided opinions on the case that set the stage for a trial or settlement." Wilken determined that the First Amendment "does not guarantee media organizations unlimited rights to broadcast entire college football and basketball games, a defense used by the NCAA to justify not paying players for use of their names, images and likenesses." The judge in a 48-page ruling "denied both the plaintiffs' and the NCAA's motions for full summary judgments in their favor before a jury trial" (BIRMINGHAM NEWS, 4/12).

Garber Has Prostate Cancer, Will Still Manage MLS During Treatment

MLS yesterday announced that Commissioner Don Garber has been diagnosed with prostate cancer. He has undergone a series of comprehensive tests and the cancer has not spread. Doctors expect he will have a full recovery, and he will continue managing the league during treatment. Garber has begun treatment at Sloan Kettering Memorial Hospital, which will be followed by surgery at Mt. Sinai Hospital in N.Y. (MLS).

MLB Admits Umpires Got Challenged Call Wrong In Red Sox-Yankees

MLB officials last night admitted that their replay center "did not have quick access to a good look" at a disputed play in the Red Sox-Yankees game in which umpires confirmed a challenged call that appeared to be incorrect. When Yankees SS Dean Anna doubled in the eighth, he "lost contact with the bag after sliding." Replays "clearly showed he was tagged out" by Red Sox SS Xander Bogaerts, so manager John Farrell challenged the call. However, the umpires confirmed it. Farrell: "We had five angles that confirmed his foot was off the base. When the safe call came back, it certainly raises questions if they’re getting the same feed we are. It makes you scratch your head a little bit" (BOSTON GLOBE, 4/13).

Silver Says NBA Will Reevaluate Playoff Qualification Format

NBA Commissioner Adam Silver on Friday said that the league "needs to consider changes to the format that puts the top eight teams in each conference in the playoffs." Under the current system, one Eastern Conference team with a losing record this season "will make the playoffs while one Western team with at least 47 wins will be left out." Silver, interviewed during a Spurs TV broadcast, said, "My initial thought is we will take a fresh look at it. When these conferences were designed it was in the day of commercial (air) travel. It was very different moving teams around the country" (SAN ANTONIO EXPRESS-NEWS, 4/12).

Golf Channel Premieres Three-Part Arnold Palmer Biopic Tonight

Golf Channel’s three-part documentary tribute to golfer Arnold Palmer, titled "Arnie," premieres tonight at 10:00pm ET. The series includes "100 interviews and conversations with a still sharp Palmer over the past year" and "examines what was Palmer’s hardly initial embrace" of late IMG Founder Mark McCormack. Palmer's business enterprises and charitable legacy, "particularly the hospitals named for his late wife, Winnie, are also explored" (MULTICHANNEL.com, 4/11).

The film is "a classically dutiful documentary," but expanding Palmer’s history to three installments "feels like a bit of largesse predicated more on availability than need" (VARIETY.com, 4/11). "Arnie" is an "upbeat yarn and leaves us with an ode that would fit nicely on Palmer’s website" (N.Y. TIMES, 4/13). The Palmer biopic is "so good you need not be a golf fan to enjoy it thoroughly," although some viewers "might dismiss part 1" (CABLEFAX DAILY, 4/11).
