Oak View Group Adds New Partners In KeyArena Project

Oak View Group yesterday introduced Hollywood film and TV producer Jerry Bruckheimer and billionaire investment banker David Bonderman as partners in its KeyArena renovation project, and OVG said that it "intends to pursue an NHL team in the short term and an NBA team down the road." Bonderman has been a minority owner of the Celtics for "more than a decade," and Bruckheimer is a "close acquaintance" of NHL Commissioner Gary Bettman. Bruckheimer also has "long expressed a desire to become a franchise owner." Bonderman and Bruckheimer "join other OVG equity partners" MSG, Live Nation and Delaware North "to help supply project funding" (SEATTLE TIMES, 6/8).

Nashville To Host Stanley Cup Viewing Parties Despite CMA Festival

Downtown Nashville "viewing parties will go on" for tonight’s Stanley Cup Final Game 5 and Sunday’s Game 6 even with the 80,000 daily fans expected for the CMA Music Festival, which begins today and runs through Sunday. Predators festivities will "include outdoor Stanley Cup viewing parties on Broadway for both games," but this time they will be "away from the center of the honkey-tonk entertainment strip." The scene there will feature two giant screens, and the site will open at 5:00pm ET. The Predators plan to open Bridgestone Arena for 13,000 fans (Nashville TENNESSEAN, 6/8). Actor Ashton Kutcher “mic-dropped a catfish on the stage” last night during the ’17 CMT Music Awards in Nashville. He was presenting the award for best collaborative video (TENNESSEAN.com, 6/7).

Red Sox Analyst Remy Apologizes For Controversial On-Air Comments

NESN Red Sox analyst Jerry Remy last night “apologized on air” for comments he made during the broadcast on Tuesday in which he said non-English speaking MLBers should not have interpreters. Remy, “I made some comments that offended a number of people. I sincerely hope you accept my apology, thank you very much.” NESN in a statement said that it “did not agree with Remy’s views and that the network also apologized for them” (BOSTON GLOBE, 6/8).

Levy Restaurants Takes Over Food Services At Univ. Of Arkansas

By Don Muret, Staff Writer

Levy Restaurants has signed a multiyear deal with the Univ. of Arkansas to take over food service at Donald W. Reynolds Razorback Stadium, Bud Walton Arena and Baum Stadium, the SEC school’s baseball facility. Levy’s agreement takes effect this fall and coincides with a $160M expansion of Razorback Stadium in the north end zone, which will be completed for the ‘18 season. Levy replaces Sodexo, the university’s old food provider. The Arkansas deal is Levy’s 12th college account and third in the SEC behind Missouri and Texas A&M.

MLB Suspends Auction For Game-Worn Hunter Strickland Brawl Jersey

MLB last night “suspended the auction" of the jersey worn by Giants P Hunter Strickland in the game he exchanged punches with Nationals RF Bryce Harper last month. The jersey was “on sale through MLB.com's auction site, with the bidding reaching $1,500 as it approached the final hour” yesterday. MLB replaced the bidding field "with a note that said the winning bid was instead just $200.” It is “unclear what exactly happened, but the league was likely responding to several national reporters pointing out the strange nature of the jersey being up for sale” (CSNBAYAREA.com, 6/7). As of yesterday afternoon, “14 bids had been placed bringing the jersey’s price up to $1,500.” But “just as quickly as many people noticed it was there, it was gone” (SPORTS.YAHOO.com, 6/7).

Discovery Communications, Eurosport Execs Support Paris '24 Bid

Execs from Discovery Communications and Eurosport, which have TV and multi-platform rights in Europe for the Winter and Summer Games from '18-24, today "met with members of the Paris 2024 Olympic Bid Committee in a show of support for an Olympic Games to be held in Europe" in '24 (DEADLINE.com, 6/8). Discovery and Eurosport management met with Paris 2024 co-President Bernard Lapasset during the French Open. A Paris Games would be "advantageous for Discovery in terms of scheduling, especially compared with L.A., which is hours behind mainland Europe" (VARIETY.com, 6/8).

Stadium Authority To Discuss UNLV's Use Of New Raiders Home

The Las Vegas Stadium Authority today will discuss UNLV’s use of the Raiders new stadium, but “what becomes of the more than 69 acres” on which the school’s Sam Boyd Stadium sits “remains unknown.” UNLV President Len Jessup will “present options to the Nevada Board of Regents,” per its request (LAS VEGAS SUN, 6/6).

Pelicans F Anthony Davis Touts Clothing Line On "Jimmy Kimmel Live"

Pelicans F Anthony Davis appeared on ABC’s “Jimmy Kimmel Live” last night and discussed his signature line of clothing at Saks Fifth Avenue, noting they “came to me and wanted to do something special." Davis: "It was a great opportunity for me. Of course, going to stores, it’s very tough for me to find clothes, which is insane, and so I thought it would be a great idea for me to make my own clothes.” Host Jimmy Kimmel: “So these are clothes for giant people.” But Davis noted “it started that way and then my whole family was like, ‘Well, what about me?’” Kimmel asked, “Do people hit you up for free clothes?” Davis: “All the time and I say, ‘Well, you can go to the store’” (“Jimmy Kimmel Live,” ABC, 6/7).

NBA, ESPN Remember Todd Harris During Warriors-Cavs Game 3

The NBA held a moment of silence ahead of last night's Warriors-Cavaliers Game 3 for longtime VP/Broadcasting Todd Harris, who passed away Tuesday. During the second quarter, ESPN’s Mike Breen noted the “NBA lost a good man” in Harris. Breen said Harris was “one of those behind-the-scenes stars who organizations can’t do without. He was able to get things done because of the way he treated people every single day. He was great at his job, but where he really excelled was as a father." ESPN’s Mark Jackson: “A class act, a tremendous guy who that loved the game of basketball and loved the NBA” (“Warriors-Cavaliers,” ABC, 6/7).

Quick Hits....

"We had a development in Ontario. We were hoping that case was going to be dismissed. It was not. I think it points out the ongoing practical problems that are posed by this particular logo" – MLB Commissioner Rob Manfred, on a lawsuit that claims the Indians’ Chief Wahoo logo is discriminatory (Cleveland PLAIN DEALER, 6/8).

“It’s the first time we put our name on the side of a building. Buffalo is not where we are, but who we are. We really wanted to be here” – Delaware North co-CEO Jeremy Jacobs Jr., on building its HQ (BIZJOURNALS.com, 6/7).

“It's either going to be a heck of a lot of fun or by Monday morning, radio will once again be the number one medium in the world, and it could go either way in my estimation” – SiriusXM’s Dave Moody, on Monster Energy NASCAR Cup Series drivers calling this Saturday’s Xfinity Series race at Pocono (“NASCAR Race Hub,” FS1, 6/7).

Morning Hot Reads: Rising Up

The N.Y. DAILY NEWS writes under the header, "Racism And Prejudices Are Still Baseball's Biggest Issue." If MLB ever "wants to stop being the third wheel, behind the NFL and NBA," then it will have to start by getting rid of "racist antics that people of color have always realized" are a part of the game. The DALLAS MORNING NEWS writes about what former MLBers Mike Schmidt and Jerry Remy missed in their "criticism of perceived language barriers."

SPORTING NEWS writes Predators play-by-play broadcaster Pete Weber is "having the time of his life." Weber is "one of those people who rarely, if ever, has a bad day." Yet the "uber-upbeat" personality, that has worked with the team since its inaugural season in '98, is "even more buoyant than usually lately" with his team participating in its first-ever Stanley Cup Final.

Final Jeopardy!

Last night’s “Final Jeopardy!” category was “British Kings.”

“Bearing Roman numeral I, he subdued Wales and was called the ‘English Justinian’ for his legal reforms.”

Laugh Track: Oh, Baby

ABC’s Jimmy Kimmel said courtside seats for last night's NBA Finals Game 3 in Cleveland "went for as much as $20,000 a pop." Kimmel: "Usually to be able to afford that you have to have a baby with a player” (“Jimmy Kimmel Live,” ABC, 6/7).

Last night’s edition of ABC’s “Jimmy Kimmel Live” featured “superhuman” Barcelona F Neymar on the roof of the show’s studio attempting to score a goal from the roof across Hollywood Boulevard. Kimmel: “Not only is the net more than 150 feet away, it is being guarded by America’s No. 1 goalie/security guard, Guillermo” (“Jimmy Kimmel Live,” ABC, 6/7).

A special edition of ABC’s “Jimmy Kimmel Live” aired once again prior to NBA Finals Game 3, with Kimmel saying Quicken Loans Arena is the "only arena where you can get garlic fries and a subprime mortgage too." Kimmel: "The Warriors, as you know, won the first two games of the series which means they're now 14-0 in the playoffs, that's a record. It looks like their strategy of having all the best players on one team is paying off. ... After Game 2, a writer for ESPN.com tweeted that the Cavaliers' locker room had a ‘strong reefer aroma to it’ which the first thing it means is the writer's old because no one says reefer anymore. But it also means that the unthinkable has happened. Someone in the NBA, and I don't know who, but someone is smoking pot. You know what else has been high during the NBA finals: The ratings. This has been the highest-rated NBA Finals series since 1988 when Michael Jordan won his last title. [LOUD APPLAUSE] I didn't realize the audience was filled with salespeople from ABC. More than 20 million watched Game 2. They’ve already renewed this series for next year, that's how well the ratings have been doing.”

The broadcast aired a new “promo” for Warriors G Steph Curry’s new shoe, with Kimmel noting, “Curry is no stranger to criticism. Last year during the Finals he released a new shoe that didn’t go over well with the Internet. … These are the kind of sneakers you yell at your dad for wearing, unless he’s a nurse then it’s okay. So this year Steph is rolling out another new shoe. This shoe though is targeted specifically at a group of customers who are too young to complain about how they look.”

The broadcast also showed footage of show staffer Guillermo Rodriguez attending NBA Media Day for the NBA Finals, his sixth time attending Media Day. According to Kimmel he has “talked to everybody” who has played in the Finals except Cavaliers F LeBron James. Kimmel said of James not speaking to Guillermo, “He’s kind of like Guillermo’s own Matt Damon. But this time Guillermo had a different plan. This time instead of chasing James around, Guillermo made it known that this time he wouldn’t be talking to LeBron" (“Jimmy Kimmel Live Game Night,” ABC, 6/2).
