IOC Expected To Recommend Awarding '24, '28 Games At Same Time

By Ben Fischer

The IOC Exec Board today is expected to recommend awarding both the '24 and '28 Olympics simultaneously, a big step toward returning the Summer Games to the U.S. for the first time since '96. IOC President Thomas Bach is scheduled to take media questions at noon ET. The decision would still need to be ratified by the entire IOC membership, which is scheduled to meet July 11. The exact details of how a combo package would proceed, including which city goes first, are still unknown, but it would guarantee Olympics for both L.A. and Paris, the only remaining contenders for '24. Neither city has backed off its desire to host in '24, but L.A. has suggested it is open to hosting in '28.

Source: L.A. Could Get More Olympic Revenue By Hosting In '28

It has become "highly likely" that the '24 Games will be staged in Paris, while the '28 Games "will take place" in L.A., according to sources. One source said that L.A. "would be encouraged to stand aside for four years by being offered a higher share of revenues from sponsorship and broadcast rights." The IOC is due to meet in Lima, Peru, in September to vote on the '24 host, which "looks set to become a rubber-stamping exercise." That session "may used by the IOC leadership to urge members to accept a radical overhaul of the bidding structure" (FINANCIAL TIMES, 6/9).

IOC Likely To Approve 3-On-3 Basketball For '20 Tokyo Games

The IOC today in Lausanne is "expected to vote to include 3-on-3 basketball" in the '20 Tokyo Games, and such a vote "would mark the culmination of a seven-year effort by FIBA." Since the governing body debuted 3-on-3 at the '10 Youth Olympics in Singapore, "pickup games have flowered in all corners of the world." USA Basketball CEO Jim Tooley said 3-on-3 is "much more accessible." Tooley: "It's a totally different style of game. It's an incredibly fast-paced sprint." The half-court format features a 12-second shot clock. The game ends after a 10-minute period or when one team reaches 21 points (BLEACHERREPORT.com, 6/8).

The IOC also is likely to greenlight BMX freestyle park for the '20 Tokyo Games. In this form of BMX racing, cyclists perform tricks on a skateboarding course (Ben Fischer, Staff Writer).

U.S. Soccer Phenom Christian Pulisic Makes A Splash In 2-0 Win

A crowd of 19,188 was on hand last night at Dick's Sporting Goods Park as USMNT F Christian Pulisic "came of age" in a FIFA World Cup qualifier against Trinidad & Tobago. Fans "saw the future of American soccer" in the 2-0 win, with Pulisic scoring both goals. The 18-year-old is now "ready for his closeup," as fans have "never seen an American with more natural ability to score" (DENVER POST, 6/9). The crowd was a sellout, and there were "more than a thousand temporary seats added" (DENVERPOST.com, 6/8).

Colts Host First Town Hall In Indianapolis For Season-Ticket Holders

About 1,000 Colts season-ticket holders attended last night's town hall event at Butler Univ., and team Owner Jim Irsay used the occasion to "double down on his mandate of multiple Super Bowl triumphs during the Andrew Luck era." The event, hosted by ESPN's Matt Hasselbeck, was the "first town hall in the Colts’ 33-year Indianapolis history." Fans "had the chance to greet" both coach Chuck Pagano and GM Chris Ballard, as well as "listen to on-stage discussions" with players and execs. Irsay spoke alongside his oldest daughter, Colts Vice Chair Carlie Irsay-Gordon, and "offered a spirited appeal to his fan base" (INDIANAPOLIS STAR, 6/9).

Las Vegas Stadium Authority Preps For Major Agreements

The Las Vegas Stadium Authority yesterday "breezed through a report-filled board meeting," taking "no major actions, but prepping for next month when a barrage of agreements involving the Raiders, UNLV and stadium financiers begin." When the board meets again July 13, "high on the priority list" will be the UNLV Joint-Use Agreement, which "will spell out procedures and policies relating to the Rebel football team’s use" of the Raiders' new stadium. Another "key document the authority is expected to address" next month will be a "community benefits agreement that will assure subcontracts to minority and small businesses" (LAS VEGAS REVIEW-JOURNAL, 6/9).

Now, unfortunately I bumped into an old friend and things didn’t go exactly according to plan.” Beckham then sat down with Corden and said he would “definitely not” accept the role of James Bond if it was offered to him “because it’s not my profession. I like to do things like that with you and with you only.” Corden then showed various photos of Beckham and the numerous fashion and hair choices he has made over the years, with Corden asking, “Are there any looks you regret the most?” Beckham: “Most of them” (“The Late Late Show,” CBS, 6/8).
