Estimated Crowd Of 70,000 Attends First NFL Draft Held Outdoors

There were “70,000-plus” fans last night at NFL Draft in Philadelphia, lending an "absolutely electric atmosphere" to the first round. ESPN’s Trey Wingo said, “What a scene in Philadelphia, what a night it has been it has been so far.” As the Eagles' No. 14 draft pick approached, Wingo said the “crowd is absolutely going crazy right now.” Just prior to NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell announcing the Eagles' selection, Wingo noted, "This place just kicked it up a notch." Goodell was booed each time he took the stage (ESPN, 4/27).

The Steelers took Wisconsin DE T.J. Watt at No. 30 overall, and in announcing the pick, Goodell paid homage to late Steelers Owner Dan Rooney as "one of the best men I've ever known." Pro Football HOFers Jerome Bettis and Franco Harris "joined Goodell at the podium to honor Rooney" (PITTSBURGH POST-GAZETTE, 4/28).

The Browns’ three first-round picks – Myles Garrett, Jabrill Peppers and David Njoku – are "scheduled to throw out the ceremonial first pitch" for tonight's Mariners-Indians game at Progressive Field (OHIO.com, 4/27). Meanwhile, the Cleveland Plain Dealer ran an editorial cartoon on the Draft and ESPN layoffs.

Time Inc. Opts To Reject Takeover Offers, Retaining Assets

By Eric Fisher

SI parent Time Inc. said this morning it is not selling company assets, rejecting various takeover offers, and instead will “continue to pursue its strategic plan” under President & CEO Rich Battista. Time Inc., like many legacy publishers, has been struggling in recent years with the industry-wide decline in print readership and ad revenue, particularly after its '14 split from Time Warner. The company had been up for sale, with fellow publisher Meredith Corp. among the reported interested bidders. But after evaluating multiple offers, Time Inc.’s board instead decided to stay on its own path that includes a heightened emphasis on digital video, TV programming, live events, film production and other similar efforts.

“Time Inc. is a reinvigorated company uniquely positioned to succeed in the multi-platform media marketplace,” Battista said. “Our transformation has brought a number of potential partners interested in working with us to unlock and accelerate value across our portfolio of brands.” The decision not to sell comes as Time Inc.’s Newfront presentation is scheduled for May 4 in N.Y. Time Inc. stock plummeted nearly 20% in pre-market trading in the wake of the news.

This is only the second time since '07 the Senators have been "among the final eight teams" (OTTAWA CITIZEN, 4/28).
