Williams Sisters Set For Historic Singles Final At Australian Open

A Serena Williams-Venus Williams matchup is now set for the Australian Open women's singles final on Saturday, the first such meeting at a major final since Wimbledon in '09, which was also Venus' "most recent Grand Slam singles final appearance." Serena said that she "did not watch" her sister's semifinal against CoCo Vandeweghe but was "well aware of the result before she walked on court" for her semifinal win over Mirjana Lucic-Baroni (N.Y. TIMES, 1/26). Venus, who is 36 years old, and Serena, 35, will be the "oldest two players to contest a Grand Slam final" (USA TODAY, 1/26).

Meanwhile, Roger Federer "continued his "improbable progress" to the men's singles final after beating Stan Wawrinka, and a "blockbusting showdown with Rafael Nadal on Sunday now seems tantalisingly close." Nadal "still has to overcome Grigor Dimitrov in order for that miraculous reunion to come to pass" (TELEGRAPH.co.uk, 1/26).

Ryan Lochte Lands Swimsuit Endorsement Deal With Tyr Sport

By Ben Fischer

U.S. swimmer Ryan Lochte has a swimsuit sponsor again, as Tyr Sport today will announce it has signed the embattled star to an endorsement contract. This comes five months after competitor Speedo cut ties with Lochte amid the Rio gas station scandal. Terms are not known, but the deal will last through the '20 Tokyo Games, which Lochte’s agent, Jeff Ostrow of ProPlayer Sports LLC, called his “one more chance to do this.” Lochte is currently serving a USOC/USA Swimming suspension for the incident in Brazil, with hopes of making his return at the U.S. Open swim meet Aug. 2-6. Tyr renewed its sponsorship of USA Swimming earlier this week.

ESPN's Wide World of Sports Complex hosts the Pro Bowl Experience this week around the game in Orlando, and the NFL has lined up a "couple of technology-based attractions." The fan event also features "several stations for fans to test their skills." The VR experiences and other stations are "free to attend." The event runs Wednesday, Thursday, Saturday and Sunday (ORLANDO SENTINEL, 1/26).

UC San Diego Health "has become the Padres' medical arm," marking the first time since '81 that the team has a "new healthcare provider." A deal with Scripps Clinic expired at the end of the '16 season. The move is "not believed to be a result of the 30-day suspension" to Padres Exec VP & GM A.J. Preller after MLB determined the team "had withheld medical information" from the Red Sox. UC San Diego has "gained a significant partnership after losing" its deal with the Chargers when the NFL team relocated to L.A. (SAN DIEGO UNION-TRIBUNE, 1/26).

Meanwhile, St. John's Univ. announced a deal making New York-Presbyterian Queens the official hospital of Red Storm Athletics (St. John's).

St. Louis Univ. last night unveiled another new Billiken mascot, four months after the first attempted reboot "drew social media ire from fans." During the halftime reveal in a men's basketball home game against UMass, fans "seemed pleased with the new 'Bill.'" The "first reboot was called everything from a mutated frog to 'the stuff of nightmares' back in September." Meanwhile, Providence College last night "debuted a second mascot with a throwback feel: a dalmatian costume." PC's "very first mascot was a dalmatian" in '35, before the school created the Friar mascot in '63. Providence also wore throwback uniforms in last night's man's basketball game against St. John's (PROVIDENCE JOURNAL, 1/26).
