Advance Auto Parts To Title Sponsor NASCAR's Clash At Daytona

By Adam Stern

Daytona Int'l Speedway this morning will announce that Advance Auto Parts has landed the entitlement for the Clash, a season-opening, non-points Monster Energy NASCAR Cup Series. The deal is for multiple years, and a source said DIS was asking low- to mid-six figures annually. The 75-lap race, which will be known as the Advance Auto Parts Clash, was most recently known as the Sprint Unlimited. The ISC-owned track in late November announced that the race was reverting to the Clash name, and it had been searching for a title sponsor since.

Chargers To Hold L.A. Ceremony; Kimmel "Swears In" Rivers, Bosa

The Chargers today will hold a ceremony at the Forum in Inglewood to celebrate the team's move to L.A., beginning at 12:00pm PT. Speakers will include Chargers Chair Dean Spanos, coach Anthony Lynn and QB Phillip Rivers, as well as NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell, Rams Exec VP/Football Operations & COO Kevin Demoff and Inglewood Mayor James Butts (Chargers).

Meanwhile, during last night’s edition of ABC’s “Jimmy Kimmel Live,” Rivers and Chargers DE Joey Bosa were “sworn in” to playing in L.A. by host Jimmy Kimmel as they recited an oath over a pair of yoga pants. After the two players entered to cheers from the audience, Kimmel said, "Are you excited about moving to L.A.?" Rivers: "I'm warming up to it. It's been 13 years in San Diego." Kimmel: "San Diego's real nice. Now you have to come (to L.A.) and everybody's weird." Bosa, who is from Florida, said, "Plenty of weird people in Miami, too" (“Jimmy Kimmel Live,” ABC, 1/17).

Aviva To Offer Maple Leafs-, Raptors-Branded Insurance Policies

Aviva will "offer Raptors- and Leafs-branded home and auto insurance" under a partnership to be announced today by the U.K.-based insurer and MLSE. The insurance products will feature "perks for policyholders, like deals on tickets or meet-and-greets with players." This "provides yet another signal that sponsorships are being phased out in favour of comprehensive marketing deals." Aviva "wanted new ways to leverage its presence in the sports world, while MLSE sought to broaden its portfolio of licensed products and corporate deals." The Patriots "have a similar arrangement with Plymouth Rock insurance," but this deal is the first of its kind "involving a Canadian team" (TORONTO STAR, 1/18).

Baseball HOF Balloting Will Show Shift Toward PED-Era Players

The results of Baseball HOF balloting will be released tonight at 6:00pm ET, and it is expected to reflect the "voting body's rapidly loosening attitudes" toward PEDs. While "none of the biggest names" from MLB's '90s-'00s doping scandals has "made it to Cooperstown, and none likely will make it this time, the day appears to be fast approaching." Roger Clemens and Barry Bonds are "expected to see significant jumps in support, to the point where induction on future ballots, if not in 2018 then soon thereafter, is almost a certainty" (WASHINGTON POST, 1/18).

The BOSTON HERALD goes with, "Roger Clemens And Barry Bonds On Way To Hall Of Fame – But Not This Year." The N.Y. DAILY NEWS' John Harper writes under the header, "Why I'm Not Joining Other Hall Voters Who Put PED Kings On Ballot." SACRAMENTO BEE's Marcos Breton: "My Baseball Hall Of Fame Ballot Is Packed With Steroid ‘Cheaters’ And I’m Done Caring If You Hate It." Baltimore SUN: "PEDs Will Continue To Dominate Baseball Hall Of Fame Discussion For Years To Come."

Lakers' Jeanie Buss Meets With Magic Johnson Amid Sub-Par Season

Lakers President Jeanie Buss last night met with Basketball HOFer Magic Johnson, though the "exact nature of the meeting was not immediately clear." Sources indicated that Buss "has been soliciting opinions on the direction the franchise should take moving forward, after three straight losing seasons and possibly a fourth." Buss, Johnson, Lakers Special Projects Manager Linda Rambis and Dodgers Exec VP & CMO Lon Rosen were "seen having dinner at a restaurant inside Staples Center," after which Buss and Johnson "sat next to each other" to watch the Lakers' loss to the Nuggets (ESPN.com, 1/18).

NCAA Recommends Lighter Practice Schedule For Football

The NCAA is "recommending that college football teams abandon two-a-day practices and scale back the number of full-contact days" in an effort to "reduce concussions and other injuries." The proposal, distributed to schools by the NCAA Sport Science Institute yesterday, calls for a "mandated full day off each week and a reduction in preseason full-contact practices to three from four." The NCAA also "recommended a one-week extension to the preseason, which would require a legislative change by the membership." NCAA President Mark Emmert plans to formally announce the proposed changes tomorrow (WALL STREET JOURNAL, 1/18).

Morning Hot Reads: Seal Of Approval

USA TODAY notes no matter which teams win the AFC and NFC Championship games this weekend, President-elect Donald Trump will "find himself with a link to whichever teams trek to Houston" for Super Bowl LI. Trump's history with the Patriots is well documented, but he also has "meaningful connections" to the other three remaining teams.

BOSTON GLOBE staff photographer Matthew Lee has worked NFL games since '87, but Sunday's Patriots-Texans playoff game was the "first time" he had ever "been hit and knocked over by a player." Personal safety was a secondary concern, as the first reflex of a photo journalist is to "protect your gear."

NBC’s Jimmy Fallon on last night's edition of NBC's "The Tonight Show" said, “On Sunday, a Facebook live video of Pittsburgh Steelers head coach Mike Tomlin trash talking the New England Patriots went viral, but Patriots head coach Bill Belichick didn't seem too bothered by it, telling a Boston radio station, ‘I'm not on SnapFace and all that.’ Belichick went on to say, ‘If Tomlin wants to come at me on Instagoogle that's his business. We'll settle this on the field, not Skypee, MyFace, or TubeBook, but please, follow me on Pinterest for tips on how to update your home interiors for spring. K, bye!’” (“The Tonight Show,” NBC, 1/17).
