Chargers' Spanos Continues Whirlwind Trip To L.A., Meeting With Mayor

Chargers Owner Dean Spanos today will meet with L.A. Mayor Eric Garcetti and L.A. County Supervisor Mark Ridley-Thomas, "followed by a welcome dinner" hosted by Lakers President Jeanie Buss (L.A. TIMES, 1/13). This continues a "whirlwind first two days" for the franchise since announcing it will relocate. The first 24 hours were "so hectic that Spanos didn't even have time to visit the site" of the new $2.6B stadium in Inglewood. After informing team employees of the move, Spanos by 9:00am PT was "in the air," meeting Inglewood Mayor James Butts an hour later. There was a "brief call to San Diego Mayor Kevin Faulconer, the mayor’s response described as curt." Spanos also attended last night's NHL Jets-Kings game (ORANGE COUNTY REGISTER, 1/13).

Late-Night TV Hosts Satirize Chargers' Relocating To L.A.

ABC’s Jimmy Kimmel said of the Chargers' relocation announcement, “Two teams is a lot of teams. I was ready for some football. I don't think I was ready for this much of it. They've already changed their logo, the Chargers, to the Dodgers' logo, so that makes it official. The reaction from fans here in L.A., I don't know even know if I'd call it mixed. Fans here in L.A. reacted the same way we react to opening a Bed Bath & Beyond coupon in the mail” (“Jimmy Kimmel Live,” ABC, 1/12).

TBS’ Conan O’Brien: “We have two teams now, two teams to be disappointed by. This is great!” (“Conan,” TBS, 1/12). Both "Kimmel" and "Conan" are taped in the L.A. area (THE DAILY).

Rams' McVay Is Youngest NFL Head Coach Ever; Chargers To Hire Lynn

The Rams today will introduce Redskins offensive coordinator Sean McVay as the "youngest head coach in league history." McVay will turn 31 on Jan. 24. The press conference will be held at the team's training facility at Cal Lutheran (L.A. TIMES, 1/13). This is an "audacious move that stole some of the spotlight from the uprooting of the Chargers and stunned many throughout the industry" (ESPN.com, 1/13). The decision is a "risky one for the Rams but a very inspired one" (SAN JOSE MERCURY-NEWS, 1/13). It is a "high-risk, and potentially high-reward, hire that will shape the future of the team" (ORANGE COUNTY REGISTER, 1/13).

Meanwhile, the Chargers reportedly will hire Bills interim head coach Anthony Lynn as their new coach in the hope that he "can breathe some fresh air into this franchise in a new city" (ESPN.com, 1/12). To say that Lynn "has his work cut out for him is a massive understatement." Not only does he "have to help oversee the Chargers’ messy move to L.A., he stands to inherit a team that has won a combined nine games the past two seasons while finishing a distant fourth place in the competitive AFC West" (SI.com, 1/13).

Mavericks-Suns Game At Mexico City Arena Falls Short Of Sellout

The Mavericks beat the Suns last night before an announced crowd of 19,874 at Mexico City Arena, falling just short of a sellout. However, "many prime seats in the lower bowl remained empty." Fans "whistled more than they cheered, especially when the Suns dancers took the court." The game attracted a "host of local celebrities" including Televisa Deportes NFL reporter Georgina Holguin, actor/writer Luis Ernesto Franco and actresses Ana Serradilla and Marimar Vega (ARIZONA REPUBLIC, 1/13).

Mark Cuban To NBA Refs Union: "I Just Want To Make Things Better"

Mavericks Owner Mark Cuban rebuffed claims made about him by the NBA's referee union, saying that he "has no intentions of changing his ways of trying to bring change to a system that he believes desperately needs it." The NBRA in communications obtained by Yahoo Sports has asserted that Cuban "tries to intimidate and control game officials and that the league doesn't police him enough." But Cuban "remains steadfast" in defending his behavior. He said, "It's more politics because there's a new guy coming in. I've never said favor the Mavs. I just want to make things better" (DALLAS MORNING NEWS, 1/13).

This comes after a report that the NBRA is "asserting that the NBA is cowing" to Cuban, "charging him with pursuing a competitive advantage for his team 'via threats and intimidation'" toward referees. In a recent letter to NBA President of League Operations Byron Spruell, NBRA General Counsel Lee Seham "outlined what the union considers to be a lengthy pattern of documented violations by Cuban of the NBA constitution and 'undue influence of the league’s management of its officials.'" In letters to Seham and the union, Spruell "rejected the idea that Cuban holds any undue influence over employment decisions on officials” (SPORTS.YAHOO.com, 1/12).

Ceremony Site For '24 Games In Focus As L.A. City Council Meets

The L.A. City Council meets today to discuss the '24 Games bid, and LA 2024's plans to "potentially hold" the Opening and/or Closing Ceremonies at the new NFL stadium in Inglewood instead of the L.A. Coliseum are "likely to be a source of conversation." Two L.A. officials are "recommending the City Council approve a Memorandum of Understanding" between the city and bid group that would require the council's approval to "any venue changes" for the ceremonies. The Inglewood stadium is "listed as a likely Olympic venue in the latest venue plan," though the Coliseum "continues to be designated as the opening and closing ceremonies site" (ORANGE COUNTY REGISTER, 1/13).

Warriors Reverse Course On Hiring Former Police Chief Amid Backlash

The Warriors "briefly retained" former S.F. Police Chief Greg Suhr as a security consultant, but ended the relationship yesterday "just hours after it was announced amid backlash on social media from activists." The "once-embattled top cop" was "supposed to help the team prepare for its groundbreaking ceremony Tuesday." Suhr, who was appointed chief in '11, "quit in May at the request of Mayor Ed Lee after several controversial police shootings." Suhr also "fielded criticism as chief when a scandal came to light involving a number of officers exchanging racist and homophobic text messages" (S.F. CHRONICLE, 1/13).

Execs from the Warriors, A's and Raiders have "presented a $750,000 check to aid victims and relief efforts from the deadly warehouse fire last month in Oakland" (AP, 1/12).

"If I knew back then what I know now, I would have never played football. Never. I wish I had known about all of those head injuries, but no one knew that. And the people that did know that, they wouldn’t tell anybody" – College Football HOFer and former NFLer Bo Jackson (USA TODAY, 1/13).

"It's something that I know all of sports are looking at right now, and that is the format of the game and the length of time it takes to play the game. Obviously people, particularly millennials, have increasingly short attention spans, so it's something as a business we need to pay attention to" – NBA Commissioner Adam Silver (ESPN.com, 1/12).

Morning Hot Reads: Killer Bill?

The SAN ANTONIO EXPRESS-NEWS writes city officials are concerned that the passage of Texas Senate Bill 6, which is "aimed at policing transgendered people" with respect to bathroom usage, could "cause significant economic devastation to the city’s booming convention and destination business." The city is scheduled to host next season's Final Four, but the law could turn all Texas cities "into municipal pariahs."

The N.Y. TIMES notes Mercedes-Benz Stadium sits in a "chasm between rich and poor" in Atlanta, an "uncomfortable reminder of the disconnect between the vast wealth of the NFL and the cities to which they extend open palms." Laugh Track: Pace Of Play

Actor Mark Wahlberg appeared on TBS’ “Conan” last night and talked about his physical training routine, which includes playing golf early in the morning. Wahlberg: “I run the golf course. I play golf for an hour and 15 minutes.” Host Conan O’Brien asked, “How much golf can you play in an hour and 15 minutes?” Wahlberg: “All 18 holes, because I actually love my wife. Guys that play four-and-a-half hours, five hours those are the guys that don't want to go home.” O’Brien asked, “Do you even get out of the golf cart? Are you just driving and whacking the ball?” Wahlberg: “It’s not like polo. I get out and hit the ball. I just don't spend too much time milling about” (“Conan,” TBS, 1/12).

CBS’ "The Late Show" aired a segment in which host Stephen Colbert thanked some of the show’s smaller sponsors who do not get on-air mentions as much, including "Avocado Pit Golf Balls." Colbert: "Finally…a use for them" (“The Late Show,” CBS, 1/12).

NBC’s Jimmy Fallon said, “It was just announced that Tim Tebow won't be invited to the Mets' major league Spring Training camp. In response Tebow said, ‘Okay, hockey it is. Here we go. Let's try it, let's try it. I don't know. How do you do it?’” (“The Tonight Show,” NBC, 1/12).
