NFL's L.A. Committee To Hear Presentations On Stadium Proposals

The NFL's Committee on L.A. Opportunities today will kick off two days of meetings outside Chicago that "will help shape a road map for the league moving forward and a clearer indication of just where it will end up by the start" of the '16 season. A San Diego group backing a proposed $1B Mission Valley stadium today will meet with the six-owner committee in "what could be the group's last best chance to convince the NFL that they have viable stadium plans." The Rams tomorrow will make a presentation on a proposed Inglewood venue, while Carmen Policy will make a "similar presentation" on the Chargers- and Raiders-backed stadium in Carson (ORANGE COUNTY REGISTER, 8/9).

Twitter Signs Two-Year Deal With NFL To Carry More League Content

By John Ourand

Twitter signed a two-year deal with the NFL that will see the social media site carry more league-branded content – a further sign of the growing importance social media companies are placing on sports content. The agreement, which will be announced this morning, follows two one-year deals the NFL signed with Twitter in '13 and '14 around Twitter’s Amplify advertising platform. The new pact will see the NFL provide more than 100 30- and 60-second clips per week to Twitter (up from the 30-40 it had been providing over the past two years). Another change will see Twitter take the lead in selling the league’s content; the NFL and Twitter jointly sold it over the past two years.

Like in the past two years, NFL content on Twitter will consist of in-game highlights and next-day recaps. Under the new deal, it also will include GIFs, infographics and NFL Network studio clips.

Under Armour To Sponsor NBA Draft Combine In Eight-Year Deal

Under Armour today is announcing an eight-year deal with the NBA that includes "title sponsorship of the NBA draft combine and presenting sponsorship of the league’s expanding youth basketball program." The agreement calls for UA to supply uniforms for the combine beginning in '18, "coming off the season in which Nike takes over the on-court apparel position" held by adidas since '06. UA also will develop a retail line of NBA draft combine fan apparel. Other aspects include a "jointly presented Fit mobile app" (SPORTSBUSINESS JOURNAL, 8/10 issue).

Wrigley Field Evacuated, But Officials Deem Bomb Threat Unfounded

Chicago police yesterday afternoon evacuated Wrigley Field "after someone called in a bomb threat" following a Giants-Cubs game, "but investigators determined the threat was unfounded." Reporters covering the game said that they were "ordered out of the press box because of a 'safety issue' and made to leave" the ballpark around 6:00pm CT. Police finished their investigation just after 7:00pm, and reporters and staff were "allowed back in." The venue was "mostly empty of fans by the time police arrived" (CHICAGO TRIBUNE, 8/10).

Falcons' McKay Seeks Reinstatement To NFL Competition Committee

Falcons Owner Arthur Blank said team President Rich McKay "in a few weeks" is set to meet with NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell and other league officials about being reinstated to the NFL Competition Committee. McKay was suspended from the committee "as part of the team's penalty for pumping fake noise into the Georgia Dome" during the '13 and '14 seasons. He was suspended effective April 1 and eligible to apply for reinstatement after June 30 (ATLANTA JOURNAL-CONSTITUTION, 8/10).

Remembrances Pouring In For Late "MNF" Announcer Frank Gifford

Pro Football HOFer and former “MNF” announcer Frank Gifford is being remembered today after he died yesterday at 84 from natural causes at his Connecticut home. NBC’s Willie Geist noted Gifford was the “biggest thing going when he was a player for the Giants” and was a “massive star whose power went over generations because of ‘Monday Night Football’” (“Today,” NBC, 8/10).

Gifford called “MNF” from ’71-97, and became “as much a part of the country's Monday night routine as the game itself” (L.A. TIMES, 8/10). He was part of a legendary broadcast team with Howard Cosell and Don Meredith, a group that "became bigger than the game" and are "responsible for helping to make the league what it is today" (N.Y. DAILY NEWS, 8/10).

For more remembrances of Gifford, see today’s issue of THE DAILY.
