Increased TV Money Likely To Push Packers Revenues Over $350M

By Daniel Kaplan

The Packers today plan to publicly release their earnings, providing a glimpse into the annual financials of an NFL team. The Packers are the only public NFL team, and thus the only one to disclose revenues and profit figures.

Last year, for the 12 months ending March 31, 2014, the club reported $25.3M in net income, depressed from previous years because of four large player contracts (for '13 the club had a $43.1M net profit). With new TV money now reflected in the soon to be released numbers, the Packers are likely to report record net income of over $50M for the fiscal year ending March 31, 2015. The Packers last year reported revenue of $324.1M. With roughly $27M extra in TV money having flowed to each club from the new broadcast contracts, Packers revenues should easily top $350M. Given the club’s onfield success, local revenue is likely to have risen also.

FIFA Plans Feb. 26 Extraordinary Congress To Elect New President

The FIFA Exec Committee at its meeting in Zurich today announced it "will hold an extraordinary congress meeting to elect a successor" to President Sepp Blatter on Feb. 26, 2016 (TWITTER.com, 7/20). The body today also is "likely to consider several radical reforms." It will be presented with proposals including a "reduction in size, more stringent eligibility criteria and term limits for its top executives." Blatter after the meeting is expected to address the media "for the first time since he called for a new election on June 2" (WALL STREET JOURNAL, 7/20).

LeBron James Set For First NBPA Meetings With New Exec VP Role

Cavaliers F LeBron James at today's NBPA summer meetings in Las Vegas will "preside for the first time" as an Exec VP. Clippers G Chris Paul said, "He's the face of our league. His opinion matters. Our players will listen when he talks." This comes as the players "prepare to opt out" of the CBA in '17 to "gain more access" to the $24B in league revenues under the new TV deal. NBPA Exec Dir Michele Roberts: "This is an important time for the game and it is critical that we have some of our marquee players involved in the discussion" (Cleveland PLAIN DEALER, 7/20).

Monday British Open Finish Has Little Impact On Canadian Open

The rain-delayed British Open is set for its first Monday finish in almost 30 years, but Golf Canada CEO Scott Simmons said that the delay "won't negatively affect" this week's PGA Tour RBC Canadian Open. The event begins Thursday at Glen Abbey in Oakville, Ontario. Simmons said that the "biggest impact would be on Monday's pro-am with Canadian players." Some players, such as Graham DeLaet and David Hearn, "won't be able to take part because they will still be overseas" (GLOBE & MAIL, 7/20).

Big 12 Football Media Days: Expansion Will Be Hot Topic

The Big 12's preseason football media gathering begins today at the Omni Hotel in Dallas, with coverage on FS Southwest. The "national spotlight won't be as intense for the Big 12" as it was for the SEC media days last week. The conference is heading into its 20th season (HOUSTON CHRONICLE, 7/20). Commissioner Bob Bowlsby "will discuss" expansion during today's state-of-the-conference address, but he will say that there is "nothing on the docket right now." Iowa State AD Jamie Pollard said, "I don't see a need to do it. Somebody needs to quantify why we should do it" (DES MOINES REGISTER, 7/20).

The ACC also kicks off its football media days at Pinehurst, N.C. The Raleigh NEWS & OBSERVER offers five "ACC-centric questions to consider during the three-day kickoff event."

Rare July Storm In California Causes Rainouts For Angels, Padres

The Angels today will play a "split-admission doubleheader" against the Red Sox after last night's home game was postponed by rain, "the first time since June 16, 1995." The last time the Angels made up a home rainout with a doubleheader was in '88. The "rare July storm" delayed the 5:00pm PT start by about 2 and 1/2 hours before it was canceled (ORANGE COUNTY REGISTER, 7/20). This is the 11th rainout "in the 49-year history of Angel Stadium" (ESPN.com, 7/19). The team's Twitter feed noted CF Mike Trout was three years old "the last time we had a home rainout" (TWITTER.com, 7/19).

Meanwhile, the July rain also "washed out a Padres home game" for the first time since '06 (SAN DIEGO UNION-TRIBUNE, 7/20). The game against the Rockies will be made up Sept. 10 (Mult., 7/20).

All-American Soap Box Derby Taking Over Akron For Six Days

The All-American Soap Box Derby continues today in Akron with "new sponsors and the expectation of bigger crowds." The event, "six years back from the brink of financial disaster," kicked off yesterday and "for the first time will take place across six days." Officials expect "more than 10,000 people to be on hand" for Saturday's final race. Today, "more than 400 champions" ages 8-21 will "parade down Main Street" (CLEVELAND.com, 7/18).

"Trainwreck" Does Better Than Expected In Box Office Debut

The Universal comedy "Trainwreck," which features LeBron James in a supporting role, earned $30.2M in its debut at the box office this weekend. Those numbers "bested initial projections" of roughly $20M (VARIETY.com, 7/19). The film "did its biggest business" in N.Y. and L.A., "as expected." What was "surprising was the movie's performance in Cleveland." It "over-indexed to the tune of 66 percent in Cleveland." It also over-indexed in "certain cities in Florida" (HOLLYWOODREPORTER.com, 7/19).
