Maytag Partnering With MLB; Activation Includes Fan-Vote Contest

Maytag and MLB today announced a partnership that makes Maytag the league's official washer and dryer in '15. Activation launches today with the "Filthiest Plays of the Week," in which Maytag and MLB ask fans to vote on plays made on the field. Baseball HOFer Barry Larkin will help promote the "Filthiest Plays." MLB All-Star Events Get Underway With Sold-Out Futures Game

By Eric Fisher

Yesterday’s MLB Futures Game, featuring minor-league all stars, and Celebrity Softball Game at Great American Ball Park drew an announced paid attendance of 43,661. The total was listed as a sellout, though the ballpark was a bit more than half full for the game. The Futures Game historically has been the weakest draw of MLB All-Star Game events each year, but has seen marked growth in recent years. The host club Reds had three of their prospects in the game.

MLB last night held an All-Star gala for more than 3,000 people at Cincinnati’s Union Terminal. The art deco building, currently a rail station, museum and theatre, was the real-life inspiration for the Hall of Justice in the '70s animated TV show “Super Friends.”

MLB Commissioner Rob Manfred today at 1:30pm ET will conduct his first All-Star online Town Hall Meeting since assuming the sport’s top management role in January. The session, to be held at the T-Mobile All-Star FanFest at the Duke Energy Convention Center, will be streamed live on MLB.com.

U.S. Women's Open Sets Attendance Record, Eclipsing '05 Mark

The USGA announced that the '15 U.S. Women's Open drew a record attendance of 134,016 for Monday-Sunday at Lancaster Country Club in Pennsylvania. The previous record was 131,298, set in '05 in Colorado. Even "before the announcement was made" on Fox' live broadcast, "there was a strong sense from those working at the event that the '05 mark at Cherry Hills was in jeopardy." Golfer Michelle Wie: "It's been such a big crowd to play in front of. There is so much support and they were so excited to see us play" (PENNLIVE.com, 7/12).

Meanwhile, the PGA Tour John Deere Classic, which also concluded yesterday, drew "record-size crowds" despite some inclement weather. Jordan Spieth won the event and was the "marquee attraction" for the week at TPC Deere Run in Illinois (QUAD-CITY TIMES, 7/13).

Mitsubishi Electric To Sponsor Tom Watson, Appearing On Hat

Mitsubishi Electric today announced a deal to sponsor golfer Tom Watson, who will wear the brand's logo on his hat in competition starting this week with the British Open at St. Andrews. Per the deal, Watson will promote Mitsubishi Electric worldwide. The brand will explore other partner and community engagement opportunities with the golfer. This is expected to be Watson's final British Open (Mitsubishi Electric).
