Hometown All-Star Todd Frazier Wins Home Run Derby In Cincinnati

Reds 3B Todd Frazier won last night's Home Run Derby at Great American Ball Park, with the "hometown All-Star" outslugging Dodgers CF Joc Pederson 15-14 in the "final round in the first year of a bracket format." Fans dressed in red "chanted Frazier's name and cheered his every homer throughout the night" (AP, 7/13). When Frazier won the event, the ballpark "got louder than it has since 2010" (CINCINNATI ENQUIRER, 7/14).

MLB was able to stage the Derby after weather forecasts initially calling for thunderstorms last night in Cincinnati did not materialize during the competition. The league did make a late switch to the Derby format, tweaking the rules about an hour prior to the start by shaving a minute off each player’s timed round and eliminating some opportunities for bonus time, helping complete the event in slightly more than two hours and just before another storm descended on the city overnight. Heavy rain and a tornado warning hit Cincinnati early yesterday afternoon. “Given what had been forecast (for Monday night), this is a huge win,” said Reds COO Phil Castellini (Eric Fisher, Staff Writer).

MLB All-Star Game Tickets: Secondary Sales Up 31% From Last Year

By Eric Fisher

StubHub yesterday said that its sales for today's All-Star Game in Cincinnati are up 31% from a year ago in Minneapolis and are its second-best ever for the event, trailing only the event two years ago at N.Y.’s Citi Field. The average ticket price for purchased All-Star Game tickets on StubHub is $733, down 10% from $813 a week ago.

Federal Judge Orders NCAA To Pay Attorneys' Fees In O'Bannon Case

Federal magistrate judge Nathanael Cousins last night ordered the NCAA to pay nearly $44.4M in attorneys' fees and $1.5M in costs to lawyers for the plaintiffs in the Ed O'Bannon class-action lawsuit. The decision comes "nearly a year after U.S. District Judge Claudia Wilken ruled that the NCAA's limits on what major college football and men's basketball players can receive for playing sports 'unreasonably restrain trade' in violation of antitrust laws." The plaintiffs' lawyers had asked for nearly $45.6M in fees and nearly $5.3M in costs and expenses (USA TODAY, 7/14).

DraftKings Expects To Bring Fox Sports On Board As Investor

DraftKings as early as today "expects to add Fox Sports and other investors to its portfolio, largely replacing" Disney's $200M investment in the brand. Fox Sports would be "another elite sports investor in daily fantasy." The NBA and NBC Sports both own part of FanDuel, while MLB has a stake in DraftKings (N.Y. TIMES, 7/14).

Meanwhile, FanDuel has closed on a mammoth $275M Series E round of venture capital financing, giving the company a valuation in excess of $1B. Existing FanDuel investor KKR led the funding round, joined by Google Capital, Time Warner Investments, Turner Sports and several individual NFL and NBA team owners (Eric Fisher, Staff Writer).
