Jets Set To Hire Texans' Mike Maccagnan For GM Position

The Jets are expected to name Texans Dir of College Scouting Mike Maccagnan the team's new GM, and sources said that there is an "official announcement forthcoming." Maccagnan "spent the weekend in New Jersey for an elongated second interview that sealed the team brain trust's conviction that he's the right man for the job." Maccagnan "will have final say" on any roster additions, but "indications are that he'll have an open mind to create an optimal environment for organizational success" (N.Y. DAILY NEWS, 1/12).

Meeting At White House Could Address Direction Of College Sports

A source said that President Obama and other administration officials this week are scheduled to meet with NCAA execs and college ADs at the White House. The session is "expected to precede the announcement of a so-called 'Coalition to Save College Sports' spearheaded by the 10 conference commissioners" in the FBS. The meeting likely will cover a "range of topics," including a possible presidential commission to "review the state and direction of major-college sports," as well as a campaign against sexual violence on campus (USA TODAY, 1/12).

Top NBA Brass Gathers In Miami For Sales/Marketing Meeting

The NBA will hold its annual sales and marketing meeting today and tomorrow in Miami at the JW Marriott Marquis. Top league execs, team presidents and team marketing execs will meet to discuss marketing, sales and sponsorship plans. NBA Commissioner Adam Silver will address the attendees along with NBA CMO Pamela El, and the league will recognize team business performance in a variety of categories including top season ticket sales, new full season ticket sales and local sponsorship sales. Outside speakers will include Under Armour Founder, Chair & CEO Kevin Plank and Google Senior VP/People Operations Laszlo Bock.

Newcastle Looks To Join With Other Brands For Super Bowl Ad

Newcastle today is rolling out an "irreverent" campaign in which it "will try to recruit 20 to 30 brands to help it break into the Super Bowl advertising melee." In exchange for a cash contribution, the "other brands' logos and messages will be incorporated into a spot crafted with Newcastle" by Droga5 that will run online and "in some local NBC television markets during the game’s broadcast."  Rival beer advertisers "are not invited to join." A new online video features actress Aubrey Plaza making a "blasé pitch for why other marketers should join Newcastle" (N.Y. TIMES, 1/12).

Mitsubishi Electric Signs Miguel Angel Jimenez As Endorser

Mitsubishi Electric today formally announced that it has signed golfer Miguel Angel Jimenez as a brand ambassador, marking the brand's first global, corporate player sponsorship. Jimenez will wear the Mitsubishi Electric logo on his golf shirt, beginning at the '15 Mitsubishi Electric Championship at Hualalai later this month, which marks the start of the Champions Tour season. The brand will explore further partner and community engagement opportunities with Jimenez (Mitsubishi Electric).

AEG Chair Phil Anschutz To Receive Citizen Of The West Award

The National Western Stock Show today will present AEG Chair Phil Anschutz with the honor of '15 Citizen of the West. Anschutz will accept the award at a banquet to benefit the National Western Scholarship Trust. The award is in its 37th year. Anscutz' "philanthropy is centered on the family-run Anschutz Foundation," whose most recent tax filing shows assets of $1.1B and charitable disbursements of $50M in '12 (DENVER POST, 1/11).

Morning Hot Reads: CFP National Championship Edition

Ahead of tonight's inaugural CFP National Championship Game, the MIAMI HERALD's Greg Cote writes, "College football is and will be better for its playoff." The Oregon-Ohio State matchup "offers the perfect, instant validation," as the CFP and its selection committee "could not have prearranged the semifinal results any better to drive the point" (MIAMI HERALD, 1/12). The AP's Tim Dahlberg writes, "The event the playoff resembles most isn't the Final Four, but the Super Bowl" (AP, 1/10).

But under the header, "College Football Championship Still Faces Challenges," the Raleigh NEWS & OBSERVER's Barry Jacobs writes, "You can appreciate college football and still question placing greater demands on the bodies and minds of players, who are supposedly students first" (Raleigh NEWS & OBSERVER, 1/12).
