Investigating Sheriff Finds No Reason So Far To Charge Tony Stewart

The sheriff in charge of investigating Saturday's crash in which Tony Stewart hit and killed driver Kevin Ward Jr. said that there is "no evidence so far to file criminal charges against Stewart." Ontario County (N.Y.) Sheriff Philip Povero said that "his department continues to gather information, asking fans who were at the race to turn over video of the crash." Stewart withdrew from yesterday's NASCAR Sprint Cup Series race at Watkins Glen (CHARLOTTE OBSERVER, 8/11).

Plymouth (Ind.) Speedway last night in a statement on its website said that Stewart "will not race Saturday at the track in his home state" (Toledo BLADE, 8/11). Meanwhile, there was a "deafening silence" on the incident at yesterday's Cup race. There was "no moment of silence" for Ward, and Rev. David Fife in his pre-race invocation "made no mention of the loss of life the night before, instead thanking God for the weather on race day" (N.Y. DAILY NEWS, 8/11).

USA Today runs a series of stories on the incident, previewing its coverage with the front-page headline, "Death On A Dirt Track Clouds NASCAR Image" (THE DAILY). The AP's Wawrow & Gelston write, "The sport was left reeling from a tragedy that could have ripple effects from the biggest stock car series down to weeknight dirt track racing" (AP, 8/10).

PGA Of America Plans To Bring Marquee Events Back To Valhalla

After a PGA Championship at Valhalla that saw record ticket sales and attendance, the PGA of America "intends to return to the course it owns with some of its marquee events in the future." PGA of America CEO Pete Bevacqua said, "We have every intention to come back here with our championships." PGA of America President Ted Bishop: "There is no question that we'll be back here again with the Senior PGA, another PGA Championship and in all likelihood down the road, another Ryder Cup" (Louisville COURIER-JOURNAL, 8/11).

Meanwhile, the Championship Shops set up at Valhalla today will hold a clearance sale from 8:00am-4:00pm ET, with merchandise marked down 50% "for the one-day sale" (BIZJOURNALS.com, 8/10).

Soccer Commentators Men In Blazers Leaving ESPN For NBC Sports

Soccer commentary duo Men in Blazers is leaving ESPN for NBC Sports. Shortly after the EPL season begins this month, Michael Davies and Roger Bennett will have a "weekly Monday night show" on NBCSN and will "contribute radio, TV and written pieces for the network's various outlets." NBC Sports Group President of Programming Jon Miller said Men in Blazers "are not going to stop talking about" MLS, but the "focus of their relationship with us will be the Premier League" (WALL STREET JOURNAL, 8/11).

San Jose Takes Case Against MLB To Ninth Circuit Appeals Court

The city of San Jose this week "resumes its high-stakes legal game against MLB," pressing its claim in the Ninth Circuit Court of Appeals on Tuesday that the league's "refusal to allow the A's to move south violates federal antitrust laws." The court will hear arguments in a case that "challenges baseball's nearly century-old exemption from antitrust laws." Many legal experts say that a ruling against the league, while unlikely, "could force a settlement in favor of an A's move to the valley" (SAN JOSE MERCURY NEWS, 8/11).

IMS Expected To Keep MotoGP Event, Drop IMSA Sports Car Race

MotoGP "likely will race" at Indianapolis Motor Speedway in '15, while IMSA's sports cars "will not." Track President Doug Boles said that the "Thursday-Friday format used by sports cars the past three years on NASCAR's Brickyard 400 weekend has not worked for either the sanctioning body or the track." He added that "there are discussions about IMS hosting a standalone sports car event in the future, but there wasn't enough time to flush out details" for '15. Boles "expects IMS will be on the schedule" that Dorna Sports, the MotoGP commercial rights holder, announces in the fall (INDYSTAR.com, 8/10).
