Pizza Hut Sells 30-Second Super Bowl Ad Slot Back To Fox

Pizza Hut today will announce that it has sold its 30-second Super Bowl ad slot back to Fox and "will not advertise" during the Feb. 6 game telecast. Meanwhile, Georgi Vodka Co. Owner Martin Silver held a Saturday news conference to "express his interest in buying at least a piece of the club" (NEWSDAY, 1/30). Also, Glaceau Founder Mike Repole said of owning part of the team, "It definitely is something that interests me, definitely something that intrigues me, and I want to have a meeting with them" (N.Y. TIMES, 1/30).

Gary Bettman Says NHL Has Seen Overall Increase In Concussions

By Fred Dreier, Staff Writer

NHL Commissioner Gary Bettman in a press conference before Saturday’s All-Star SuperSkills Competition said a league-wide survey of injuries from this season showed an overall increase in concussions. Bettman said concussions caused by fighting and "inadvertent contact" have risen substantially, while concussions caused by blind-side hits to the head – made illegal last year by the league's controversial Rule 48 – have decreased. Sources said the BOG will likely decide whether or not to add more teeth to the rule at the springtime meeting.

Bettman also touched on several proposed team sales and other franchise issues. See today’s issue of THE DAILY for more from his press conference and complete All-Star weekend coverage.

Laugh Track....

During the "Weekend Update" segment on NBC's "SNL" this weekend, cast member Seth Meyers reported, "It was noted for the first time in Super Bowl history neither of the teams competing have cheerleaders. No word yet on how players from either team will remember to 'go.' Green Bay had cheerleaders at one point but stopped after 1965's tragic frozen human pyramid incident" ("SNL," NBC, 1/29).

MONOLOGUES:

CBS aired a rerun of the "Late Show" on Friday.

NBC's Jay Leno: "Record snowfall all across the country. Oh my God, here's how much snow there is: Yesterday, Charlie Sheen dropped a bag of cocaine, couldn't find it. ... Charlie Sheen rushed to the hospital yesterday after 36 hours of drugs, booze and partying with five porn stars. It's always the ones you least expect. ... Really, how different is a hospital from Charlie Sheen's house? I mean he's surrounded by women dressed as nurses, there's plenty of drugs and it's still costing only $12,000 a day. ... TMZ is reporting that Charlie Sheen was partying with five adult film stars. Five! What are you trying to start some kind of porn star basketball team? ... Since Kris Humphries of the New Jersey Nets has been dating Kim Kardashian, he is averaging more points per game. But hey, you should get extra points for dating Kim Kardashian, don't you think? ... The Cleveland Cavaliers, they're not doing too well. They've lost 18 games in a row, and 28 of the last 29 games. That's not good. Cleveland is so bad, today LeBron James was officially charged with leaving the scene of an accident. ... Authorities have broken up a group of Mexican drug smugglers who were using a catapult – a catapult – to launch bales of marijuana over the border into the United States. This would be a clever idea if we were still living in the Bronze Age. What is this, Wile E. Coyote technology? ... The only reason they got caught, Willie Nelson and Snoop Dogg showed up with catcher's mitts. ... A new report out this week – and this is very depressing – shows that just 1% of American students are proficient in science. They said in a few years we could be a nation of science and chemistry illiterates. Well, you thought a lot of meth labs were accidently blown up before? Oh, my God. It is going to get worse. ... According to a new study by Indiana University, men watching the news are more likely to pay attention to the story if a sexy female anchor is the one doing the reporting. Well, more bad news for Keith Olbermann" ("The Tonight Show," NBC, 1/28).
