College Marketing Notes: Washington State, Nike Extend Athletic Apparel Contract

In Portland, Matthew Kish reported Nike and Washington State "have agreed to a 10-year contract extension" to outfit the school's athletic teams. The parties in June "agreed to the extension, which runs through June 30, 2025." The previous contract "was set to expire" on May 31, 2017. The WSU deal includes a $1M bonus and an "increased allowance for footwear and apparel." WSU "will get" $2M of Nike merchandise each year of the deal, up from $1.2M under the previous arrangement. It will also "get $200,000 in cash annually," making it a $23M contract over 10 years (BIZJOURNALS.com, 9/21).

BREAKING THE DAM: In Portland, Allan Brettman reported Oregon State has chosen locally based Watson Creative to "lead its new marketing and branding campaign." Watson will produce "marketing and branding materials for digital, print, radio and outdoor campaigns for football, basketball, baseball, gymnastics, and wrestling." Other Watson clients include the Dolphins, Bruins, Pistons and Raiders (Portland OREGONIAN, 9/22).

MARK MY WORDS: CBSSPORTS.com's Jon Solomon noted NCAA President Mark Emmert "laughed" yesterday when asked about the "Likeness" T-shirt line that pokes fun at him and the organization. Emmert said of the shirts from former UNC QB Caleb Pressley, “I thought it was funny. I won't be engaging with him and I can't imagine it's a hot ticket. I hope he's not banking on that for the rest of his career. I thought it was clever” (CBSSPORTS.com, 9/21).
