BUFFY SLAYS THE PHILLIES, AS TEAM MOVES FROM WB TO UPN AFFIL
Published October 21, 1998
The Phillies are moving 70 regular-season games from
WPHL-WB to WPSG-UPN, according to Bill Fleischman of the
PHILADELPHIA DAILY NEWS. WPSG already carries 21 Flyers
games and is scheduled to air 20 76ers games. WPSG VP/GM
Walt DeHaven said that although WPSG is a UPN station, the
network's programming will be preempted about 28 times over
200 nights. DeHaven said that he "expects" any scheduling
conflicts between teams to be resolved by Comcast SportsNet,
the cable outlet for all three teams. Fleischman writes
that the Phillies were "driven off" WPHL by WB shows like
"Buffy the Vampire Slayer" and "Dawson's Creek." Sources
said that WPHL "hoped to work out" a 35- to 40-game package,
but the team wanted to air more games (DAILY NEWS, 10/21).
