GOLF NEWS & NOTES: YOU SNOOZE, YOU LOSE ON U.S. OPEN TIX

          Tickets for the '98 U.S. Open at The Olympic Club in
     S.F. went on sale the day after the completion of the '97
     U.S. Open and were sold out in less than 24 hours, according
     to GOLFWEEK.  The previous fastest Open sellout was eight
     months (GOLFWEEK, 7/5 issue).
          GOLF NOTES: New Orleans-based retail energy provider
     Entergy Corp. will become title sponsor of the city's PGA
     Tour event beginning in '99, when the tournament will raise
     its purse to $2M (Entergy)....Top-Flite will begin shipping
     its Intimidator 400 series of fairway woods and drivers
     September 15.  The clubs were developed by staff consultant
     Lee Trevino and Top Flite R&D Dir Jeff Sheets (USA TODAY,
     7/8)....PGA Tour Licensing has granted the license for men's
     neckwear to American Neckwear Corp.  The PGA Tour line will
     be sold in high-end department stores, specialty shops and
     golf resorts and will retail from $37.50-50.00 (PGA Tour
     Licensing)....Former Clinton administration appointee David
     Watkins was elected to the board of CA-based Carbite Golf
     Co.  Currently the president of a venture capital company,
     Watkins is a former VP at Callaway Golf (GOLFWEEK, 7/5).
