     Former European Ryder Cup captain Bernard Gallacher
criticized Nick Faldo for suggesting that Colin Montgomerie leave
the European Tour for the PGA Tour.  Gallacher:  "I don't think
it's right that someone like Faldo should be promoting the U.S.
tour ... Nick says when Monty wins in Europe his reaction is 'so
what?'  Well, when Phil Mickelson wins the Desert Classic, I
think so what" (DETROIT NEWS, 7/18). ...The USTA is considering
Las Vegas, Lake Tahoe and Indianapolis to host the Women's
Federation Cup final, being played in late September between the
U.S. and Spain.  Bidding for the two-day event is expected to be
about $300,000 (BOSTON GLOBE, 7/17)....Giants GM George Young on
escalating salaries in the NFL: "I tell the players, the enemy is
not management. It's agents against agents."  Young says players
see money "like monopoly.  There's no appreciating of that money"
(USA TODAY, 7/19)....The House Commerce Trade and Hazardous
Materials Subcommittee passed legislation that would tighten pro
boxing safety standards: "outlaw rigged matches and bar
unregulated commercial fights."  The bill would force each boxer
to register with a state boxing commission (CONGRESS DAILY,
7/19).
