THIS IS BUCKY BADGER'S PLANET: WISCO APPROVES REEBOK DEAL

The Univ. of Wisconsin Athletic Board yesterday approved a
five-year, $7.9M partnership with Reebok, according to the
MILWAUKEE JOURNAL SENTINEL. Some minor provisions still need to
be approved by Reebok. The tentative agreement, which would
allow Reebok to market and license UW athletic gear in exchange
for cash and uniforms for all 22 teams, now moves to the Board of
Regents for final approval. The four amendments, which must be
approved by Reebok before the Board of Regents' May 23 agenda
deadline, include two significant issues: human rights and
disparagement. Reebok has attached a declaration of standards
regarding work conditions as they relate to Indonesian factories,
but the board added minor language to "satisfy its interests."
UW coaches who prefer competing brands will be protected under
the First Amendment, but the school will answer with "damage
control." Wisconsin Associate AD Vince Sweeney says the
provisions aren't "deal breakers" (Michael Hunt, MILWAUKEE
JOURNAL SENTINEL, 5/15).
