Luis Suárez Reportedly Kept '06-14 Image Rights Income In Panama Tax Haven

From Uruguayan int'l Luis Suárez's arrival in Europe in '06 through his signing with Barcelona in '14, he reportedly "kept his image rights income in Panama," according to Sánchez & Guisado of EL MUNDO. For those eight years, Suárez diverted his image rights earnings through Meltockets Investments, which is registered in Panama. This information "is based on documents in the possession of Dutch publication NRC, to which El Mundo had access." Meltockets "functioned in a similar fashion to several other offshore organizations" (EL MUNDO, 5/10). MARCA reported after Suárez signed with Barcelona, he "moved his tax duties to Barcelona company Crantoace." The player's agent, Pere Guardiola, said, "When Luis came to Spain, we created a Spanish company to manage his image rights in accordance with the country's tax legislation and on the recommendation of the Treasury, whom we asked how to proceed." It was also reported that adidas, one of his sponsors, fined Suárez €80,000 for biting Italian Giorgio Chiellini during the 2014 World Cup (MARCA, 5/11).
