Football Notes: La Liga President Javier Tebas To Step Down, Call For Re-Election

La Liga President Javier Tebas "is reportedly standing down from his role and calling for a re-election," in which he will put himself forward as a candidate. Tebas has been president of La Liga since '13 and "it is believed he will run to be re-elected at a time when no other outstanding candidates have garnered sufficient support" to launch a major challenge. The claims were made on the El Chiringuito show, saying Tebas wishes to "renew his term as president with a fresh mandate in a move which is seen as cynical by some critics" (FOOTBALL ESPANA, 9/16).

The Court of Arbitration for Sport has granted permission for "Real Madrid's youngsters named in FIFA's case of illegal signings to continue playing." The players had "initially been banned from playing altogether, subject to an appeal," but CAS has granted the club permission to play them "subject to the ban being upheld following the club's appeal." This is a ruling "that was not allowed" for the young players of Barcelona who had been involved in FIFA's case against the Catalan club (FOOTBALL ESPANA, 9/16).

FIFA on Friday said that it appointed PwC as its new auditors. PwC's appointment "will initially be valid until the next FIFA Congress," which will take place in May, FIFA said in a statement. The congress will "then decide on the appointment of FIFA's statutory auditors for a full three-year period," it added. PwC will replace KPMG, which stepped down from the position as FIFA's auditor in June (REUTERS, 9/16).

FIFA on Thursday gave Guatemala's football federation (FEDEFUT) until Oct. 1 "to avoid suspension by reinstating an oversight committee formed after the arrest of its president." A court of the Sports Confederation of Guatemala (CDAG) suspended the committee overseeing FEDEFUT after four local players said that they had been "wrongly accused of doping." CDAG is a sports governing body to which FEDEFUT belongs. FIFA Secretary General Fatma Samoura said in a letter, "FIFA's council decided to grant Fedefut until October 1 to revoke the decision, and if it does not, Fedefut will be suspended immediately" (REUTERS, 9/15).
