Australian Football League Investigates GWS Giants Over Drugs Allegations

Australian Football League player Lachie Whitfield "has been investigated for deliberately hiding from drug testers" with the help of two former Greater Western Sydney football officials, according to Michael Gleeson of THE AGE. The AFL "has completed an investigation into the matter" and is considering what, "if any action," to take against Whitfield and former Football Manager Graeme Allan and Welfare Manager Craig Lambert. It is understood "there are incriminating text messages between Whitfield and his then girlfriend" which are at the center of the investigation. The Giants were "made aware of allegations last year and alerted the AFL of the claims." The club also hired a Senior Counsel to conduct its "own investigation into the allegation." The AFL made ASADA aware of the allegation and the sports drug body "was comfortable for the league to pursue the matter." Both Allan and Lambert have since left the Giants -- Allan was recently appointed football director at Collingwood and Lambert returned to work at the Brisbane Lions (THE AGE, 8/29).
