Argentine Second Division Confirms Strike, Denounces State Interference

The Argentine second division decided at a meeting on Wednesday "not to begin the upcoming tournament," according to LOS ANDES. At the same time, 39 league representatives "signed a letter to FIFA alleging state interference in Argentine FA matters." In the letter, they "are also demanding elections" and taking action against the Normalization Committee "because it took decisions that are not in its jurisdiction." After this decision, instead of 90 games being played this weekend -- 15 first division, 57 second division and 18 Torneo Federal -- only the 15 first division games will take place. Nueva Chicago VP Daniel Ferreiro said, "Until there is a resolution on the three central topics of the economic concerns, security and transportation of the teams, second division football will not begin." While this is happening, Normalization Committee members Armando Pérez, Javier Medín, Carolina Cristinziano and Pablo Toviggino traveled to Asunción, Paraguay, "to report to CONMEBOL on what has taken place since taking over 20 days ago" (LOS ANDES, 8/18).
