Real Madrid Could Begin Renovating Santiago Bernabéu In Summer '18

Proposed construction work on Real Madrid's Santiago Bernabéu could take place as early as summer '18 as the club looks to "kick-start" its plans, according to the EFE. Madrid Mayor Manuela Carmena confirmed in May that the team had reached an agreement with the local authorities on the stadium's redevelopment plans "but refused to disclose any specific details at the time." Madrid General Dir of Planning & Urban Management Juan Carlos Lasheras revealed that Real Madrid is "keen to undertake the bulk of reconstruction work in two years' time, in line with the forthcoming World Cup." The plans, which would see facilities expand into the Plaza de los Sagrados Corazones to the stadium's southeast side "along with a potential roof and hotel," have been hit by "a number of setbacks," including Madrid's High Court overturning the club's original planning application in March (EFE, 6/22).
