French Officials Stage Simulated Terrorist Attack On Euro 2016 Stadium In Lyon

Security officials simulated a suicide bombing attack on the Parc Olympique Lyonnais on Monday, to “test the responsiveness of emergency personnel and police in the event of a terrorist attack” on the stadium during Euro 2016, according to Elisa Frisullo of 20 MINUTES. Less than two weeks away from the start of Euro 2016, “which will draw tens of thousands of spectators” to the region, this exercise “tested the mobilization of police, gendarmes, firefighters, EMTs and officials from the city, UEFA and the Lyon airport.” Under the current “strong terrorist threat” in the region, the goal is to “train emergency officials to deal with an attack, take care of victims, disperse the crowds and secure the premises” (20 MINUTES, 5/30). In London, Aaron Flanagan reported the scenario “was based upon the event that hundreds of supporters were killed or injured in an attack.” Around 1,000 volunteers “are believed to have taken part in the drill.” The Parc Olympique Lyonnais is “one of the top venues at the tournament and will host four group stage games,” including Belgium vs. Italy and Ukraine vs. Northern Ireland, before being used in the round of 16 and semifinals (DAILY MIRROR, 5/31).
