Real Madrid Fans Applaud Barcelona's Andres Iniesta During 4-0 Loss To Rival

Almost "exactly 10 years after it first occurred," the "previously unthinkable" happened again on Saturday -- Real Madrid fans "got to their feet to applaud a Barcelona player" during the Clásico even though Real Madrid was losing, according to REUTERS. Instead of the "usual vitriol" Barcelona players have faced, when captain Andres Iniesta was substituted near the end of his team's 4-0 victory, "many of the Real faithful stood and clapped him off." Iniesta scored a "stunning strike into the top corner to make it 3-0 shortly after halftime." Ronaldinho was given a similar reception in a La Liga game at Real on Nov. 19, 2005 (REUTERS, 11/21). MARCA reported the Santiago Bernabéu faithful "made their feelings plain" during and after the game. The fans "let rip with cries of 'Florentino out!'" -- aimed at club President Florentino Pérez -- at halftime and when the game came to an end. The club responded by "attempting to drown out these expressions of discontent, moving quickly to play promotional content" and "blasting out the club anthem after the final whistle" (MARCA, 11/21).
