Former NBA Commissioner DAVID STERN has been hired by investment firm PJT Partners “as a senior adviser on what Mr. Stern insists will be more than just sports deals.” It is “one of the first major appointments to be announced by PJT after it began its new life as a publicly traded company.” Stern is “expected to dispense advice on more matters, like globalization and digital media.” Stern said, “There are very interesting changes that are taking place in the global media marketplace. A lot of companies are trying to understand it” (N.Y. TIMES, 10/31). ... Serie B side Ascoli announced the dismissal of Coach MARIO BETRONE "after four consecutive defeats." Petrone took charge last summer, "but leaves the club struggling in 20th place" (FOOTBALL ITALIA, 11/2). ... Premier League side Aston Villa will appoint ex-Lyon boss REMI GARDE as its "new manager" -- replacing TIM SHERWOOD. Garde will sign a "three-and-a-half-year deal." REGINALD RAY will be Garde's assistant "and the pair will take charge for the home fixture" against Man City next Sunday (BBC, 11/2). ... Dubai Dr. RAFFAELE CHIULLI has been "re-elected as the president of the world governing body for water sports," the Int'l Powerboating Union (UIM). Chiulli was re-elected for a second term, "with a clear majority in the first round of voting, to oversee the development of the water sports that falls within the ambit of the UIM (GULF NEWS, 10/28). ...South African Pro Continental Team MTN-Qhubeka announced it has hired ROLF ALDAG "as its performance manager." Aldag "has worked for several teams, including Telekom/T-Mobile, HTC-Highroad, and, for the last three years, Etixx-Quick-Step. MTN Team Principal DOUG RYDER said, "He's one of the most valued persons in cycling. He's built several world champions" (VELONEWS, 11/2). ... DOMINIC CURRAN will head the American unit of Synergy as CEO. He will report to Engine Group N.A CEO RICK EISERMAN (SPORTSBUSINESS JOURNAL, 11/2).
