Football Notes: Former CBF President José Maria Marin Agrees To Extradition

The Swiss Federal Office of Justice said in a statement on Wednesday that former Brazilian Football Federation (CBF) President José Maria Marin agreed to be extradited to the U.S. Marin was among seven officials from FIFA who were arrested in May. Like Marin, former FIFA VP Jeffrey Webb also agreed to his own extradition to the U.S. (REUTERS, 10/28). ... CONMEBOL announced that Argentine first division side Racing Club forward Brian Fernandez has been banned for two years, "the second year suspended," for doping at a Copa Libertadores matches. The 21-year-old "tested positive for cocaine" after a group stage match against Uruguayan club Wanderers (REUTERS, 10/28). ... Barcelona's Javier Mascherano will be available for November's Clásico at Real Madrid, after La Liga authorities banned him for two games "for directing an insult at an assistant referee" during Sunday's 3-1 win at home over Eibar (ESPN, 10/28). ... Liga MX side Monarcas Morelia retained the salaries of some of its players after "poor results" during the current season. The club has earned 17 points through 14 matches during the Apertura 2015 season. Morelia Sports VP Roberto Hernández said that payment has been retained to "analyze the situation the players are experiencing as they fight to avoid relegation" (LA AFICIÓN, 10/28). ... An online bookmaker "has come under fire" for offering odds on which England footballer "will announce that they are gay." Win Cash Live is accused of trivializing the issue after it "published a list of players and prices." According to a report in the London Daily Mirror, two Premier League stars, one an England int'l, "are on the verge of coming out." The players involved "are said to have told their friends and families and have been offered support by their clubs" and the FA (London DAILY MAIL, 10/27). ... El Salvador coach Ramon Maradiaga said that the team will name a new squad for its 2018 World Cup qualifier against Mexico next month "after the selected players went on strike for better pay and working conditions." Honduran Maradiaga, who took charge last month, said he was "upset" that the Salvadoran Football Federation (FESFUT) and the players had "failed to reach an accord and his preparations for the CONCACAF qualifier had been disrupted" (REUTERS, 10/28).
