Atlético Madrid's Move To La Peineta Stadium Once Again In Doubt

Running into difficulties with "new left-leaning" Madrid Mayor Manuela Carmena from the the Ahora Madrid platform, Atlético Madrid's planned move from next to the Mazanares river in the south of Madrid to La Peineta stadium on the northeastern outskirts "looks to have run aground, again," according to AS. José Manuel Calvo, councilor for Sustainable Urban Development, said on Wednesday that "all avenues are being explored" and that the move has not "been ruled out” while also admitting that there were doubts over the "viable reality" of the switch. Councilor Mercedes Gonzalez expressed questions over whether the deal agreed back in '08 "has to be honored or not," deciding whether the club "goes to La Peineta or not." The move was originally scheduled for '12, but has been "repeatedly delayed," and disagreement between Madrid City Hall and the regional administration means the La Liga side "now faces extra costs" of up to €40M ($45.4M) on the initially agreed deal (AS, 10/21).
