La Liga Atlético Madrid To Own New La Peineta Stadium By '17 Following Government Approval

La Liga side Atlético Madrid will be the owner of its new La Peineta stadium starting in '17, according to AS. On Wednesday, Madrid City Council Office of Urban Planning Dir Beatriz Lobón "detailed that the area near the new stadium will no longer be reserved to host an Olympics." The announcement "comes as the club and city are negotiating modifications to an agreement signed in '08." Atlético is now expected to hold games at its new stadium starting with the '17-18 season. On Wednesday, Madrid's City Council "also took the penultimate step toward authorizing urban development at the site of Atlético's current stadium, Vicente Calderón, which will include two 36-story skyscrapers." Although this "still has to receive final approval next week, Madrid City Council's Planning & Housing Commission has approved of the project." The final vote will take place next Wednesday (AS, 11/19).
