Wolverhampton Wanderers Owner Selling Club After Angry Words With Fans

League Championship side Wolverhampton Wanderers' CEO Jez Moxey revealed that Wolves Owner Steve Morgan's decision to sell the club "is the result of numerous factors," but the club owner "had words with angry supporters before the draw at Preston North End," according to Laurie Whitwell of the London DAILY MAIL. Moxey said that Morgan stepped down as Wolves chair after "reassessing his time commitments following a divorce and new relationship." Moxey, who will take "a personal role" in the sale, said that the global search for a new owner "could take a very long time." Moxey defended Morgan from supporter criticism over investment during his eight-year tenure and said, "If some of the more severe vitriol has in some way contributed to this decision then I do think that is very unfortunate." Morgan's announcement on Monday "came as a shock." Moxey: "Personally I'm extremely saddened. Steve remains owner, but we've lost a chairman. He was totally committed to Wolves and works harder and longer than anyone I know in my life." Responding to accusations from some fans of under-spending from Morgan, Moxey said, "Steve has the belief the football club should be run in a sustainable way, using a sensible strategy that involves an emphasis on producing our own players, while buying players as and when required" (DAILY MAIL, 10/1).
