West Indies has suspended head coach PHIL SIMMONS "after his criticism of the selection for the tour of Sri Lanka." Simmons "questioned the omissions" of all-rounders DWAYNE BRAVO and KIERON POLLARD from the one-day squad. Simmons said, "It's disappointing from the fact that I haven't got the best 50-over ODI squad that we can select." ELDINE BAPTISTE, a member of the selection panel, "will now take charge of the tour" which starts on Oct. 14 (BBC, 9/28). ... Indian boxer MARY KOM "finally made up her mind to hang up her gloves after the 2016 Olympics in Rio." Kom said that it was "the right time" to quit boxing. Kom: "I have achieved so much (in boxing) with God's grace. But my hunger for an Olympic Gold Medal remains. However, I have made up my mind that I will retire after the Rio Games" (DNA INDIA, 9/29). ... Juventus defender MARTIN CACERES escaped unhurt after "crashing his car in Turin on Tuesday, with tests showing he was over the alcohol limit for driving." The Uruguay int'l "lost control of his Ferrari just after midnight and struck a traffic island before careering into a bus stop and two parked cars" (GOAL, 9/29). ... Brisbane captain JUSTIN HODGES is free to play in Sunday's National Rugby League grand final "after being cleared by the NRL judiciary for his lifting tackle on AIDAN GUERRA." The NRL judiciary panel took "10 minutes to clear Hodges of any wrongdoing" (SMH, 9/29). ... Dr. ADAM MATTHEWS, the vet allegedly at the center of the cobalt crisis gripping Australian racing, "is set for a Supreme Court showdown with Racing NSW" to prevent the governing body from publicizing any potential charges against him. His lawyer, NICOLE SPICER, declined comment on the matter, but Matthews is "seeking to prevent stewards releasing any charges possibly brought against him into the public domain." No orders were made Tuesday "when it was mentioned in the Supreme Court and the case was stood over until Friday" (SMH, 9/29).
