Olympic Notes: Tokyo National Stadium Demolition Completed After Series Of Delays

The demolition of Tokyo's National Stadium "has been completed after a series of delays, clearing the way for a new structure that will be the centerpiece of the 2020 Olympics." Demolition "had been delayed by a dispute over tendering, but now all that remains of the old stadium that hosted the 1964 Olympics are piles of rubble" (AP, 5/13). ... Bernard Maas, the man who found the giant Olympic rings that adorned the Sydney Harbour Bridge, is "listing them on eBay" with the bidding starting at A$10,000 ($8,100). Maas "found the rings abandoned when he purchased the NSW factory where they were made." While he has one interested party, he thinks that "there might be a better use for them." Maas: "Australia is bidding for the Olympics again in 2028. The Olympic Committee should put them away and re-use them" (AAP, 5/13).
