Bournemouth Chair Says Club Will Choose Squad Investment Over Stadium Expansion

Bournemouth Chair Jeff Mostyn said that the club "will prioritise squad investment over stadium expansion" for its debut Premier League season, according to the BBC. In November, Mostyn said that the club was "looking to increase the Goldsands Stadium from 11,700 to about 18,000." Mostyn said, "We need to make sure that we put the majority of our investment into the team, so that we can retain our Premier League position." The club's rise to the Premier League "will undoubtedly lead to extra demand for tickets" at its Goldsands Stadium home. While Mostyn said that the club was "keen to meet that demand," he said it was more important to allow Manager Eddie Howe to add quality to his squad. Mostyn: "There were comments that with 60,000 people following the bus (for the victory parade), we could fill the Emirates, let alone the Goldsands, but that is not going to happen" (BBC, 5/6). In London, Matt Lawton wrote "however brilliant a job" Howe and his players have done in securing promotion to the Premier League, "it has come at a significant cost." Not least to the club’s "reclusive Russian owner, Maxim Demin." According to Bournemouth’s '13-14 accounts, Demin "has pumped" around £25M ($38M) into the club in the form of two loans. The loans are owed to Demin’s Surrey-based company, Wintel Petrochemicals Ltd., and the club’s parent company, AFC Bournemouth Enterprises Ltd. Quite how Demin has been able to bankroll a club he first bought a 50% stake in four years ago, buying the remaining 50% two years ago, "remains something of a mystery." He "has so far refused to speak to the media but sources in Russia consider him a 'junior league tycoon' compared to someone like Chelsea’s Roman Abramovich" (DAILY MAIL, 5/5).
