Football Notes: FIFA Task Force Proposes Women's Club World Cup

The establishment of a FIFA Women’s Club World Cup and the implementation of the 10 key development principles for women’s football were among the key points on the agenda for the FIFA Task Force for Women’s Football. The Task Force discussed possible concepts outlining details for the creation of a FIFA Women’s Club World Cup, including an inaugural edition set for '17. As part of the proposal, the Task Force noted the importance of creating such a competition to create an annual showcase of elite women’s football and to provide an incentive not only to clubs, but also to confederations and member associations, to strengthen club football and club structures in their respective regions (FIFA). ... Morocco "rejected sanctions by the Confederation of African Football for withdrawing from hosting the African Cup of Nations, calling them harmful to the sport and against the rules." Morocco "was expelled" from the '17 and '19 tournaments and fined $1M. CAF also demanded a further $9M "in compensation" (SUPER SPORT, 2/11). ... The French Professional Football League announced a partnership with FC Miami City Soccer Academy. FC Miami City is Miami's official football club and plays in the Premier Development League. The regional partnership aims to introduce and promote Ligue 1 to the American public (Ligue 1). ... Australian footballer Tim Cahill "may have shut the door on owning an A-League club" but Football Federation Australia CEO David Gallop "wants to keep it open." Gallop: "That concept has got merit. He is a massive brand in Australian football and if it was put together in the right way, then it's certainly a possibility" (AAP, 2/11).
