Spanish Football League Lays Out Plan For New Distribution Of TV Revenue

The Spanish Football League (LFP) wants to sell TV rights centrally, "as is done in other big European leagues," and democratize the distribution of money, according to Juan Jiménez of AS. The Spanish plan is to divide an annual amount of €800M ($905M) in the following way: 10% (€80M) ($90.5M) would be for the Spanish second division and the remaining 90% would go to La Liga clubs. Of the money going to La Liga clubs, 50% would be "distributed linearly," 25% based on sporting results and the final 25% based on "social implementation or resource generation." Of that "last piece of the pie, no club will be entitled to more than one-fifth." In the decentralized sale model currently in place, the two clubs that collect the most, Barcelona and Real Madrid (€140M each in '13-14), earned 7.7 times more than "those who collected the smallest amount of TV rights money." LFP President Javier Tebas has "promised to reduce" the ratio to 1:3.5 or 1:4.5. This means that if Real collects €140M ($158M), the La Liga club that collects the least will earn a "minimum amount" of €40M ($45M) (AS, 2/10).
