Viña Del Mar's Sausalito Stadium's Ability To Host Copa América Games In Question

Viña del Mar, Chile's Sausalito stadium will "remain a Copa América host venue for at least another month," according to EL UNIVERSAL. A report on remodeling work on the stadium at the end of February "will determine if it will be ready" by the start of the tournament in June. The venue is currently scheduled to host a Mexico-Bolivia match on June 19 and an Argentina-Jamaica match the following day, as well as one quarterfinal game. Chile Minister for Sport Natalia Riffo said on Saturday, "At Sausalito there are no problems with resources, but with time. Perhaps we need more workers, more shifts, but this is something we will have certainty on when we receive the report." Local authorities had requested a technical report on the renovations be completed by Saturday, "but this was delayed by one month with the aim of buying time for the stadium to meet the requirements." Copa América Organizing Committee Exec Dir René Rosas said, "The report says that various aspects are significantly delayed and there is work that has to be intensified. We hope to have a definitive report." This is the second of the eight Chilean sites "to present a problem for the organizing committee." Ester Roa stadium in Concepción "will not be ready for the group phase due to delays, which forced a secondary venue to be created at Santiago's Estadio Monumental" (EL UNIVERSAL, 2/1).
